My friend wants to restore a used series 80 gold cup to original condition. It appears the previous owner removed the firing pin plunger and plunger lever to further reduce the trigger pull. So, no problem, I ordered the parts.

But we got to thinking (this is where we always get in trouble), maybe since the gold cup was designed to be a target pistol out of the box, did colt intentionally not install the firing pin plunger and lever from the factory? Or is the gold cup supposed to have these safety devices?

Right now the trigger is extremely light, like 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 lbs by my estimation. I personally think it could use the added resistence of the firing pin plunger.

I would be VERY leery to say the least, of any pistol where original parts have been removed, and one that had a trigger pull that light. Personally, I'd replace all of the fire control parts with either orginal Colt, or quality replacents from EGW, Wilson, Brown, etc. and start from there. As you know, most if not all parts on a 1911 require some degree of fitment by a qualified gunsmith. Good luck.

The GC would have the Series 80 (firing pin block) parts. If the trigger is truly 1 1/2 lbs, it is not original and should be around 5 lbs.

My series 80 GC had the firing pin block parts. They now reside in a little box in my gun room.

Removing them added a little crispness (it felt a little spongy), and dropped a few ounces off the pull weight. The original owner on your might have also worked on the sear spring and trigger return to get the weight down that light.
