Snap caps are always a sure bet. I have always been told the older style S&Ws were OK to dry fire and I have done it on a limited basis for over 30 years without snap caps. Not so much now, as I did years ago when I first started shooting. I personally have never had any problems from dry firing a revolver.
Even though it's supposed to be safe to fire that revolver without snap caps I just don't feel comfortable pulling the trigger 500 or more times without them. IMO snap caps are a cheap insurance policy.
