Question about an M16 buttstock.

Today at the gunshow I bought a USGI 20rd mag and a buttstock for 20 dollars. The buttstock is the old A1 kind with no trapdoor and is green. while outside having a cig I struck a conversation with a guy. He said that since the stock is green it is supposaly rare and collectible. Is there some truth to this or did the guy not know what he was talking about? I am planning on cleaning it up and having it replace the colapsable stock on my AR, but I don't want to ruin anything of collector value.

And besides from getting a new buffer tube do I need to get a different buffer and spring?

A standard buffer spring for a standard length AR should work fine. As for the collectible part I think that sounds kinda like bunk, I searched google for any into on it an nothing came up about collectible green m16 buttstocks.

I have never seen a green buttstock before.

They're collectible if you can't otherwise pony up the ~$60 to get a new one.

I imagine that if it was an actual old GI green stock it would be worth something, I have never seen one. I would suggest waiting before you do anything until you know for sure, you could be holding a nice piece of history. (Or not )

it could be any number of makes or models. just because its green doesnt mean anything unless we can figure out who made it, when etc.

alot of value in guns is based on dates.

I know the stocks on the old Colt 601 rifles were green originally. Those were some of the first M16s and if it is a legit colt stock you could probably get alot more than what you paid for it.

Looking into the buffer tube hole I can see it is made out of brown fiberglass.
I just know there is no way I could be this lucky and soon I will end up feeling silly. If I can figure out how to work my camera phone I will try to send a pic and see in the know can tell me if it is real or not.

Its probably real and the guy didn't know what he was selling. I say sell it and buy more mags.

I looked at it outside in some good light and it does look legite. But unfortunely could also see that what I first thought was a scratch on the top of the stock is really a 2 1/2 inch long hairline crack. I guess that brings the value back down to 10 dollars. I think I will just slap it on my AR and not clean it up in case one day I find someone who wants it.

The standard buffer tube will work.

The A2 stock uses the same tube, plus a little spacer to add to the length.

Part #26 in this picture. Just don't use it, and an A1 stock should fit (keep the spacer somewhere you won't lose it.)
