Can anyone help me with a question regarding my Glock 9x19 magazines?

Is anyone aware of any problems that might arise from keeping these mags loaded, which obviously places constant stress on the spring mechanisms?

I keep three mags and each one is several years old. One is usually empty, one's loaded with reg rounds for practice, and one with hollows for travel and home protection.

I assume that the spring mechanisms can't last forever even though this gun is extremely durable.

I apologize if this is a stupid question, but I am all about taking meticuluous care of the few firearms I own. Thanks.

None isssue

I had one of the first Glock 17's in the county and kept the magazines loaded for years. I have been issued a Glock 23 for several years and leave the loaded most of the time except when shooting them. Again not an issued. Leave them loaded if you want. Local laws apply.

I have had my G19 mags loaded & under tension for a while and during range sessions, she's been as reliable as the day I bought her...

When I still had Glocks... one of the mags split right down between the witness holes.

I started looking at other options after that. Decided the XD was the plastic pistol for me. Love my .45 ACP!

You shouldnt have any problems, aside from lack of magazines. I keep at least five for all of my handguns, I have seven for my Glock, and will probably buy more.

Spring fatigue is mostly attributed to the loading/unloading process, not leaving mags loaded for long periods of time.

The agency I retired from went to Glocks in 1998. Agents were issued 3 mags and outside of being used 4 times a year for qualification these mags have been loaded for 8 years with no problems.

Springs are rated by how many cycles they can endure. It is widely thought that remaining compacted is no more stressfull than remaining uncompacted. I know some folks and have heard of many who have had mags loaded for years with no seeming ill effect. I have done the same.

I keep my mags for my work gun loaded at maximum capacity all the time except when shooting. I have never had any issues with the mags. They are the original mags that came with my 2nd gen Glock. As stated above its the loading and unloading process that wears the springs out.

If it bothers you enough glock mags are so cheap you can just buy you another set!!!!

In that case, you might consider a regular PM schedule for the weapon. Magazine springs are CHEAP. :)

thanks

Thanks to all for the info. Much appreciated. I'm looking forward to learning more from you folks in the future.

The cycling of the springs from shooting wears out springs faster than simply leaving them compressed in a fixed position. So, if you are concerned about magazine spring wear, never shoot your gun. ;)

That's a good idea.
