Hello all. Nice forum. Here's my question.

Years ago, I suffered from clinical depression. I spent a day (not the night) in a psych ward because I cut myself (not a suicide attempt).

However now, (thank the Lord) I am perfectly fine. I'm married, with my first child on the way :). I'm wondering exactly what the laws are about possesing a handgun and if that event may prevent me from owning one.

Thanks for your answers!

Unless you spent the night there because of a Judge I think you should be in the clear.

To be judged mentally defective there needs to be a trial where they adjudicate that you cannot be held responsible for your actions because you are so insane you don't know what your are doing or are so mentally retarded you can't take care of yourself.

The thing that is worrisome though is people want any treatment mandated by a judge as proof you shouldn't own guns as if that would have some how slowed down Cho.

Welcome to THR
Were you put there by a Judge?
That is what is going to be important.

Even if you were there for the night for observation due to some kind of dentention order or warrant it shouldn't matter. The evaluation period is not an involuntary committment.

1. Nice Quiet Riot reference, Dr. Yamato. I was under the impression that you were classically trained, not classically-rock trained:neener:

2. You should be fine. Typically the mental health portion relates to involuntary commitment to a mental facility, which is basically the point that JohnBT made.

Thanks

Thanks you guys. No, a judge had nothing to do with it. Sounds like I'm in the clear. Appreciate your help!
