I live in the gun owner's hell called montgomery county (germantown no less)...

Due to some financial troubles I had to sell my guns, and now that I'm moving in the right direction again and actually learning to manage my money, I wish to re-arm myself.

Montgomery county prices are not IMO reasonable. Whiel i did discover that there is a Gander Mountain in maryland some 2 hours away, I was wondering if anyone had any closer recommendations. (mind you, from the internet ads I saw gander mountain would save me about 100 bucks per hour of drive time, which makes it worth the hassle of driving... )

I figure might want to ask people who might know a thing or three about buying quality firearms without spending a 50% premium for living in montgomery county maryland :scrutiny:

What are you looking for specifically?

You have a couple of decent places in MoCo that I wouldn't have a problem doing business.

The Gun Rack is in Burtonsville. Huge selection of anything you could want.

Engage Armament in Kensington. My current favorite shop. They're building their inventory (new shop) and I stopped in about a week ago. The service was excellent and their prices are pretty fair.

Beyond that, On Target in Severn is your next stop.

Bass Pro at Arundel Mills has great prices, but I'm on this "support your local gunshop" kick at the moment.

On Target isn't bad on some stuff. I do have issue with the fact that they can't (won't?) order some things in, period. Don't get me wrong, I like the shop (hell, I have had a range membership there for two years now) but the full-MSRP GLOCKs and damn near full case of Ruger MK III .22's is sometimes hard to deal with.

As far as I know, that's the fault of the owner. I'm very fond of the clerks, and I've always gotten the impression that there's things about the way it's run that they'd rather change, but can't.

That said - I've bought every one of my guns except for my SKS there. Definetly worth checking out.

There are three stores in Frederick. Not especially well stocked, but will be willing to work with you to order. I often deal with Bob Wolfes at Gunrunners, 47 E. Patrick (second floor) and can recommend him. Open Tue-Fri evenings and all day Saturday. Phone 301-662-5912. Also Richard Creager at Glade Valley Sporting Goods, who is also a Class 3 dealer.

I like On Target. I bought my AR there and the price was fair. Most of their guns are sold for MSRP. Also, The Armory in Annapolis has a good selection of new and used (some very well used) long guns but fewer handguns than On Target. Select Fire in Glen Burnie offers Class 3 goodies but doesn't have a very good selection of wares for sale. There's a sporting goods and pawn shop on Richie Highway in Glen Burnie that has a couple good deals, IF you can find something you like.

For about the best prices for new mostly "hunting" rifles and a very good selection of pistols go see my little brother Robert at Bass Pro, they can also order a whole bunch of stuff. Gander Mountain in salisbury is a hike, prices aren't bad, but is better reserved as a stop on the way to OC as they are normally out of the desireable "specials". On target has a great selection of pistols, but only ARs, and the occasional mil-surp rifles. Gun shack and Shooters discount in Mt. Airy are my current favorites though, fair prices, and between the two (within 1/4 mile of each other)have a good selection of interesting milsurps and random other stuff, friendly folks too. I had high hopes for Atlantic, and they have a good selection, but are EXPENSIVE. Normally the wares on display at local gun shows give you an idea of what that shop carries year round.

Just to clarify - I have no problem with On Target in general - just wanted to make mention of a few things that irked me. All in all, they've been able to fill my needs, and that's a good thing.

ChrisB,
Hal at the Armory in Annapolis sells class III too. He also has a reasonable transfer fee as far as Maryland goes this side of the Bay.

Find the rifle/pistol/shotgun at a price that you like on the Internet and then use a local FFL to receive it.

THR member jrhines is a local MoCo FFL that does do pistols and rifles.

Good luck.

I've bought several firearms at fred's sporting goods and furniture (yeah I know) in Waldorf and had very good results. I got them to match out of state prices on a RIA Tactical (base price plus FFL transfer and stupid maryland paperwork fees). this ended up about $75 bucks less than what any other dealer I spoke with would charge me.
