With all the hoopla regarding the Remington 700 trigger nowadays, I got to wondering about my Rem 788. Does the 788 use the same trigger assembly as the 700? I've read about the 700 and 720, but have not seen anything about the 788.

I really like the way mine shoots (sub MOA if I do my part) and have never had an issue with it. I don't think I would change anything, but would be nice to know if the potential is there.

What are the differences between the 700 and 788?

Thanks

The M788 is an entirely different design, with a rear locking bolt. I suspect the trigger is also entirely different, although I don't know for sure.

Thanks guys. I've been playing with it and have not been able to duplicate the problem with the 700. As I read, the 700 bolt cannot be opened when the rifle is on "safe". I can open my bolt in either safety position, so I figured it was a different animal.

Thanks for confirming it for me.

The 'older' Model 700's have a 'bolt lock safety' and in this configuration, the bolt cannot be opened with the safety 'on'. The 'newer' Model 700's do not have this feature, and the bolt can be opened with the safety in the 'safe' or 'on' position.

Your 788 has a somewhat different trigger system than the model 700, and you can open the bolt of the model 788 with the safety in the 'on' or 'safe' position.

The models 788 and 710 are not included in the 'hoopla' that is attached to the Model 700. If your 788 trigger is in correct, unmodified condition, I should expect that your rifle would be completely safe, IMO.

All model 700's prior to 1982 have the bolt lock safeties, model 700's produced after 1982 do not have the bolt lock type safeties. Remington will inspect ALL model 700's for safe and correct function, regardless of the year produced, and IF the trigger of said rifle(s) is found to be defective by the inspection, it will be replaced free of charge by Remington, if the trigger is found to be modified in any way, or if the trigger has been adjusted in any way, by anyone OTHER THAN REMINGTON or one of their AUTHORIZED REPAIR FACILITIES, the trigger will be returned to its original factory settings, inspected for safe operation and a fee will be charged.

Some 700s have bolts that can't be opened when the safety is on SAFE. After 1982, Remington dropped the bolt lock.

The 788 does have a different trigger than the 700 and it does not use the "trigger connector" that is at the heart of the 700 controversy.
