First off let me say that i have found this site very informative and helpful. here's my question, in a few weeks me and my family(mom, dad, 2 younger brothers, 2 younger sisters) are driving from louisiana to washington d.c. and going on vacation. I don't feel comfortable without having my 45 XD within arms reach at all times, would it be alright if i brought the gun with me to D.C., i wouldn't be CCW or carrying it on me, it would be staying in a backpack that would either stay in the truck or in the hotel room. Could i get into any trouble by bringing it with me. Thanks, Josh

BTW i'm only 19 yrs old and the pistol was given to me by my grandfather as a gift

Ionic,

First, welcome to THR. Pull up a chair and sit a while. The conversation is always interesting and frequently enlightening.

Second, on the subject of your question, the answer is no--don't even think of taking a firearm to DC. In addition to losing the pistol your grandfather gave you, you would be setting yourself up for arrest and conviction on serious charges in D.C.

Well, if you were over 21 and got caught it'd be your a$$ in hot water. Since you're only 19, the cops could only assume its your dad's gun and it'd be his butt in the fire.

If it was me, I might risk it, and for all you know, maybe I have (I'm 40+), because alive and in a world of s*** is still a whole lot better than dead.
But if I had done so, I'd have fully realized that if I got caught, I'd be the one facing the consequences. If I thought my actions could land my dad's a$$ in jail, no way.

Alright thanks guys looks like i'm leaving it at home, is there anything else i can carry for self defense, are knives alright to have and is there a website where i can find what is legal to have in that area, Thanks

I could see him getting arrested, but I don't think he can be convicted of anything until this D.C. Court/gun control unconstitutional thing is resolved.

Some of that would have to do with the route you take. States have different laws on knife sizes and types, as well as pepper spray.

If you were caught with your gun in DC you would go to jail. The DC jail is not a place you want to visit.

The good news is...DC is a very safe city for tourists, just don't try to buy any crack or meth. Enjoy your trip.., Washington is a beautiful city, especially this time of year.

Even if the law REALLY SUCKS THE BIG ONE:fire: :fire: as it does in this case, it's best to obey it.:( Leave the weapon home, and watch your back, front, and both sides, while you're in the nation's premier cesspool.

Thanks for all the info guys and will keep a 360 degree watch at all times

This'll get jeers and catcalls, but when I have to leave a sidearm at home or in the car, I carry a rock. No kiddin'.

It's a little bigger than my palm, an elongated egg-shape, dunno how much it weighs --1/2 - 3/4 lb?

Not for throwing. For weight and a shot to the temple with the more pointed end.

There's a lot to be said for carrying an empty beer bottle in your vehicle or maybe even your pack. A little practice with a six-pack on a curb will instruct you as to just how to break off the bottom.

"Jeeze, Officer. I found it in the street and I didn't want to have someone run over it, so I picked it up and haven't had a chance to dispose of it properly yet."

Oh:

"Well, I'm a rock collector. This is a perfect specimen of wear due to tumbling in a river." (You'd maybe better brush up a little on your schist and your gneiss. But alternatives abound: "It's perfect for my aquarium" --let's not all use the same line, huh?)

Then there's my cane, of course.

Check out improvised weapons on the net.

LEOs: Ignore this post.

LEGISLATORS: Don't start on these, now. :neener:

OTHERS: Jeer away.

You don't need a handgun as long as you stay in the N.E. quadrant of DC where all the touristy stuff is located. It's plenty safe. :)

Now if you wander into one of the other quadrants, a handgun alone probably isn't enough. An M4 or SAW would be more appropriate. :uhoh:

In my trips to D.C., the biggest problem I had was getting caught behind the turnstiles in the subway when there was a big demonstration going on the Mall. Thought I was going to get crushed to death before someone dropped the barriers.

The DC Metro Police arrest a lot of 19 year olds with handguns. They wouldn't assume anything. You have the gun your in trobule. If they wanted to pursue it they could go to ATFE and find out who purchased the gun new (your grandfather?). As long as the transfer from your grandfather to you was legal there would be nothing they could do.

As said stay in the tourist areas and you'll be fine. Mere posession of the gun in DC will put you in big trobule.

You can't criminally charge someone on an assumption.

General Geoff:

The city government is going to appeal the ruling, and in the meantime the present law will remain in place.

If the ruling is upheld it would allow residents of the District to keep registered handguns in their homes, as well as shotguns and rifles that would not have to be secured with a lock or disassembled. There is nothing in the ruling that would provide for carrying firearms outside of one's home, and nothing that applies to visitors.

Considering that IonicDOG is going to be surrounded by a mob of 6 other people, I think he's safe...

Also family security is something Dad is responsible for. Let him handle it. ;)

While I feel that all law abiding citizens need protection from the "filth" that
roams the streets in every town (especially DC); I feel like its not a very wise
decision to carry a firearm into this locale, as other's have already stated.
DC is a "crime ridden" area to behind with, NO need to add to the staticts.

There's no federal law against 19 y.o.'s owning handguns and many states also allow it.

Car Knocker:

True, but not in Washington D.C. They have a city ordnance that prohibits those over the age of 21 from having handguns, let alone someone who is between 18 and 21. In Washington D.C. the police would presume that the 19 year-old was carrying his Father's gun, and throw them both into a very ugly slammer. It would be a sad (and expensive) way to end a vacation, and could leave both Father and son with a criminal record that would prohibit both from legally owning firearms for the rest of their lives.

Oh, and the pistol itself would be destroyed. :cuss:

Be glad you live in Utah.

Believe it or not, in California, carrying concealed without a permit is only a misdemeanor the 1st time, but is a felony in DC.
