Hey all, I'm looking to break my 10mm Cherry and I'm Jonesing for a S&W 1076. It will be my Carry Gun, Home Defense Gun, Range Gun, IDPA Gun, hell, it'll be my Do-Everything Gun.

Anyway, I'm looking at the KY Imports 1076s and have some questions.

1. They list the condition as "Very Good" but what EXACTLY does that mean? I talked to someone who has one and he said his was great, but buying a gun sight-unseen that someone just grabs out of a big box gives me the heebee-jeebees. I don't want to buy junk.

2. What's up on paying for the gun and transferring it? I want to pay KY the $380 + shipping and then have dealer transfer it for 20 bucks.

Problem is I've spoken to some FFLs and since the gun is coming from a distributor, they say that $380 is dealer price and they have to order it and then I have to pay them their marked-up price plus State sales tax on it. F that noise! One dealer will not do that, but he's 2 hours away from me, and the 4-hour roundtrip drive is not worth it. Does anybody know any DFW FFLs that will charge me a transfer only?

3. I heard I have to replace the recoil spring with a 20# unit. Where can I track down manuals and such on how to tear-down and work on the gun? Any available online? Does the heavier recoil spring preclude the use of lighter-loaded ammo?

4. I want an FBI model, but I can't find one, so I want to make mine a copy thereof. I hear the FBI models had special grips on them; what kind of grips are they and are they still available and from where? Also, what kind of sights did they have? I'm going to order the night-sight version, but I'll change those if I need to.

5. Related to my question above, how do I remove the Mag Disconnect? I heard it's easy, but I need to find out how to do it. I'm not worried about the "'Liability' - Gun will fire..." slide rollmarks, I just want the disconnect out.

Thanks for any replies.

1. Very good condition means that it might have some holster wear and minor scratches or such on it. These are probably police trade in's. For that price its worth the risk.

2. You will have to have the pistol sent to a FFL even if it was from S&W. Just the way it goes. Search around for the best transfer fee. I use Gunbroker to find a local FFL and their fees. The price is buyers price. They are just trying to make money off of you. Dont let them. Throw up the BS flag on them. If they wont, resort to the 3rd sentence above.

3. For a schematic to to www.e-gunparts.com and look under "S" 1076
http://www.e-gunparts.com/productschem.asp?chrMasterModel=1980z1076DL Replacing the recoil spring is gravy. I got mine from Wolff.

4. My 1006 had wood grips on mine when I got it. I hate the S&W plastic ones so I put on Hogue rubbers and they work great.

5. Dont know about that one. I left mine in and its not an issue with me.

Take the plunge. 10MM is a fun caliber. You'll enjoy it. I am.:D

Well let`s see... 1) The S&W 4053 I bought from them a few months ago was also listed as very good. I paid an extra $10 for them to select me an extra nice one and one with still bright night sights. The gun is mechanically excellent,the sights are bright as new and the only wear are a few very light scratches on the grips and slide. A little light scrubbing with a fine scotchbrite pad and the slide looks like brand new. I`m very happy with it YMMV.
2) I did exactly what you wanna do. Keep shopping for dealers I guess...
3)IMO it`s only necessary if you plan to shoot a lot of HOT ammo. The big Smiths are tough and not way undersprung like the 10mm Witness for example. Try S&W for manuals,they may have some online.
4)As far as I know there are only 2 grips for the 1076,flat backstrap and curved. I`m not sure but I think the FBI guns had flat ones. Sights were the same as any 1076.
5)I dunno. I just left mine intact.

Actually, for the frame decocker models only (1076 & 1026), there is a third type of grip available from S&W. This grip splits the difference on the degree of arch in the backstrap AND it has a "palm swell" feature to the sides, which many like. Some have said that this "palm swell" gives their 1076s a feel akin to holding a Sig 220.

S&W factory product code for grips for 10XX models are:

# 20500 - palm swell grip;

# 20363 - arched backstrap grip;

# 20365 - straight backstrap grip.

HTH. :)
