If I moved to MD with my guns would I need to re-register handguns there, or will Or. registered work? And there is a provision to deny "habitual drunkards" does that mean if I had a duii in Or I would be denied purchase/register of a handgun?

Thanks in advance for input.

Hi!

Almost all of MD's laws regulate point of sale, not posession/ownership.

You do not have to register any (non-NFA-regulated) rifles, pistols, or shotguns on moving to MD. There are some "Assault Pistols" which are flat-out illegal, but they are listed by name in the law.

You may own/possess magazines holding more than 20 rounds, but you may not sell them, buy any, offer to sell or buy any, loan, lend, lease, rent, etc.,etc. them. Most residents go to PA or VA to buy "standard capacity" mags if they want them. That does seem to be a(nother) loophole.

A DUI is trickier for me to answer. I recall having "have you received a DUI/DWI ..." on the list of questions you're supposed to answer "NO" to on the form, but it has been a while and now I can't recall the specific language.

That would be a good question to call a few gun shops with. I'd say ask the MDSP firearms division, but they are not very helpful people. Hate to say that, but they really couldn't be bothered and have always acted VERY suspicious when I've called with a simple question. At the least, a dealer (or three) could read the form and tell you what it says.

If you can avoid MD, by all means do so. Maryland sucks.

Good luck!

Here is the definition under Maryland Law:
"(l) Habitual drunkard.- "Habitual drunkard" means a person who has been found guilty of any three crimes under § 21-902(a), (b), or (c) of the Transportation Article, one of which occurred in the past year. "

Sounds like you'd need at least 3 DUIs before you are disqualified.

As far as getting your guns to MD, you're either going to personally drive them here, or ship them via a FFL. Getting them back from the FFL will likely require you to fill in transfer paperwork, and wait for the 8 day period associated with regulated weapons (i.e. pistols and most common "assault" rifles.)

Thanks for the responses

Boatbod,
thanks for the definition of "habitual drunkard", glad I'm not that, but as for getting them there, can't I ship to myself c/o my sister in MD, and why not checked baggage on airline?

and why not checked baggage on airline?

It's just much easier/safer to have them shipped. There have been some instances of theft.

My friend lives in MD. He has a good job, otherwise would live across the river in VA. Laws in MD are...draconian to say the least, and I'm not just talking about firearms.

I would avoid the state, but it seems like my sister needs me there.
What other laws should I worry about?

Looks us up when you get here.

The information that you're getting above is pretty much accurate as far as bringing firearms into the state.

I had the same situation when I got here and i called the MSP licensing division for the scoop. I spoke to a very nice gentleman and he said, "The registration of firearms for new residents is voluntary....and I can't imagine why anyone would want to do that."

Avoid Md. if you can...Pa. and Va. even De.are far better. Md.'s gun laws are designed to be a pita to gun owners. Also, unless you own you'r own buisness, are a le officer or some other gov't employee you can forget about ccw. Waiting periods for the handguns they will let you buy, the list goes on. Good Luck with you'r move and welcome to the dark ages state!

We >need< gun owners to come to this state so that we have the forces to get things changed.

If all of the gun owners run from this fight and go to other states, it will just be a temporary solution to a permanent problem. If the antis just have their way with us in MD, it will eventually spread to the adjacent states.

That is NO HELP

Dude, that is NO help at all. We have enough gun owners to start making headway in Maryland, and have made good progress the past few years. Just yesterday, the ammo encoding bill sponsors got hammered by the House Judiciary Committee; 35 people showed up to testify in opposition and several more people in opposition attended the session; the ONLY person who attended in favor was the owner of the ammo encoding patent. No Brady Bunchers, no Handgun Control members, etc etc.

All we need is to get more Marylanders involved (are you catching the hint here) and talking with other Maryland gun owners. If you haven't done so yet, stop over at MDShooters.com and say hello; better yet, join the site, good bunch of folks who own guns just like you.

Michael

thanks guys, I'm still undecided, but leaning towards the move, It's there or Nd (different reason entirely), but I'm sick of Or. for now.

Norton, if I do go I will definately look you guys up, and thanks for the links, seems like cool people
