In my newspapers, The Orange County Register, "Opinion" Section, I read with "respect" the following by:

Walter E. Williams (educated Negro)
-----------

~ Now let's turn to gun control laws.

What do Virginia Tech's 32 murders, Columbine High School's 13 murders, Jonesboro Westside Middle School's 5 murders, Germany's Gutenberg High School's 16 murders, the murder of 8 city council members in a Paris suburb all have in common?
Answer: *All the murders were committed in "gun-free zones."

So a reasonable question is: *Does legislation creating gun-free zones prevent murder and mayhem?

*In 1970, Israel adopted a policy to arm teachers and parents serving as school aides with semi-automatic weapons. Attacks by gunmen at Israeli schools have ceased. At Appalachian Law School in Virginia, a gunman who had already murdered 3 people was stopped from further carnage by 2 armed students.

Gun possession stopping crime is not atypical, *though it goes unreported by the media. *According to various research estimates, from 764,000 to as many as 2.5 million crimes are prevented by armed, law-abiding people either warning a criminal that they are armed, brandishing their weapon or shooting a criminal.

In the interest of *truth in packaging, I think we should rename "gun-free zones" to "defenseless zones."
------------------

*key facts IMO

This is the worst thread post I've ever seen. What does +1 mean? Make it clear who is writing/speaking/editing in your post. Provide a link. Thanks.

It says who wrote it..

I did add the link: The Orange County Register, newspaper. You can go go to their web site and read it for yourself. It's in the "Opinion Section" under the full title: "Questions on climate, gun control, taxes" by the Author mentioned in the OP thread.

As far as "the worst thread post" and "+1", that's your opinion and, my opinion.

Fairly simple, no?

I'll concede however, maybe this forum was not the right place for this thread, but I'll let the Mods move it, if that is the case.

Personally, I thought it was a great article. That said, the post could do without the "educated Negro" comment. The writer's race is irrelevant.

We should post things like this in our local papers. Start writing letters to this effect to the local media.

I'll agree that I didn't understand the title of the post, but its point was valid and the article excerpt was a great one, IMO.

Edited: Here's the link and the actual quote:

What do Virginia Tech's 32 murders, Columbine High School's 13 murders, Jonesboro Westside Middle School's five murders, Germany's Gutenberg High School's 16 murders, the murder of 14 legislators in Zug, Switzerland, and the murder of eight city council members in a Paris suburb all have in common? Link?

You know, I waved my mouse cursor all over that post, and I never got the little "linky finger" even once.

Perhaps someone who's better at this intarwebz stuff could clue me?

Maybe I'm supposed to use the planchette instead of the mouse?

Help?

First, thanks OS, for the real "link", as I just meant for anyone to link-up to the site of the paper, as listed.. my bad.

Second, about the "educated Negro" comment..

Well, in my book, I think it shows what anyone can do with an education, and with him being a "black-man", which I don't like that term, but it's their choice of wording, for the most part, around our country, that I find his background, his achievements, and his educated honesty, about most everything I've read of his, very impressive.

Makes me wish that I could at least darken my white skin, to some deep summer tan, all year round, naturally.. ;)
