Quick legality question.

Next year on sumemr break i plan on going camping alone with just my web gear and a back pack. (i know the perfect place for it, i would just follow the road and there are 3 places for me to stop for the night that have streams, so i wont get lost) plus i have several previous backpacking experiences.

Anyways, at that time i will be 17 years old. What i want to know is, is it legal for me to carry a rifle along with me? Ide like to take along a firearm.

Last time i did this i brought my mauser, but my dad was camping with me.

Now im assuming that it is not, in fact legal. But theres no harm in asking.


If it helps, i live in colorado. Ide like to have the gun and one mag for emergencys.Although its not a major factor in my camping, Ide like to have the extra security. The gun can wait until im 18 if i have to, i have a whistle, mirror, and flares for signaling if i do get lost.

Colorado has preemption, so if the NRA is telling the WHOLE truth, I don't see anything that prohibits it.

That being said, Denver (along with other places, like Boulder) seem to have their own take on "preemption," though I assume you won't be camping there.

18-12-108.7(3) says a rifle can't be transferred to you without your parent or guardian's permission. You have that, right?

I am not a lawyer. If you're really really concerned, I suggest:
1.) Looking at the statutes yourself.
2.) Calling the sherriff's office, or your local police department.
3.) Contacting a lawyer if you're still not sure.

I'd probably personally do more looking at the statutes first, then consider calling some police department. I probably wouldn't retain a lawyer on this matter. Then again, I don't live in CO, so...

Thanks for the help. If all else fails i can find out the sherifs # for where the area i am going camping and ask. Its a very small town.

Your state laws will cover where you can open carry. Just stay off NPS land or you'll end up losing your rifle and going to federal prison for awhile.
