Rabbit Hunting with my FAL.

Titan, I drove approximately a mile and a half. :)

My guess is fire ants, 308. They're also the reason I rarely see quail anymore in East Texas.

A guy who raises tame quail for a "Hunting Resort" up near Glenrose blames fence to fence farmng for the disappearance of wild quail. There are a FEW rabbits left in texas. I was up near whitney last weekend and saw my first cotton tail in about a year and a half. The people who own the property have them in their yard most days. No fireants in their yard. No agriculture . But too many dogs, cats and coyotes for a big population.

Loss of habitat due to farming practices in central Illinois pretty much did in the pheasant hunting at least as it was when I was in high school.

Here in central Ohio I don't see the rabbits like you would think by the appearance of the habitat. On the other hand, where I shoot and hunt the deer and turkey will run over you if you sit long enough.

Too bad about the rabbits; they don't need a lot as far a specialized habitat.

Lots and lots of rabbits in Texas.
We hunt in the Blackwell area. I will take my two sons, walk (sweep) the pastures about 20 yards apart. My tool of choice, a 22LR Savage with a 4X scope and peep under sights. It's deadly out past 100 yards and a riot to shoot. We cull the Jacks out and leave them for the yotes and turkey vultures, and collect the cottontails til we can't carry anymore. Last trip (January when it was kinda cool) we put 50+ in the homefront food supply. We all love it. Fried, baked, boiled, stewed (my personal favorite). Rabbit salad (like tuna or chicken salad) is fantastic. I tried making some jerky once, don't go there. Yuk....

You must have gotten one of those tame Texas Rabbits, its a good thing you didnt run into the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog! FAL's & 686's are way to light for killer rabbits. For Killer Rabbits you need the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch.

...And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O Lord, bless this Thy hand grenade that with it Thou mayest blow Thine enemies to tiny bits, in Thy mercy." And the Lord did grin and the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats and large chu... [At this point, the friar is urged by Brother Maynard to "skip a bit, brother"]... And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it." Amen.[1]

Now, how well do you count?

As far as I know, the killer strains reside mostly in England. We are very watchful though, we have heard rumors of them stowing away on boats going to the Falklands, swimming to South America and migrating up the continent to Mexico and illegally crossing over into Texas. We have not seen any this far North of the border though....
