rabbit pelt

hi,

i was wonderin if i can preserve a rabbit pelt by puttin it in a tub of borax and dryin it out like you do turkey fans. also is there anything special i need to do with the tail.

While it may preserve it, it will not make it soft like tanning.

Scrape your hide clean, place animal's brains in warm water, soak hide in brain tea, remove hide and keep it moving and stretching until completely dry. I have heard every animal has enough brains to cure it's own hide. You can add some oak chips if you would like to darken the leather.

I know there are tanning solutions available, but like the simplicity of the doing things worked out by our ancestors.

i was told this too but its not true.. i tried to tan a t-rex and only had enough to cover one arm......



i havent used brain tanning yet but i have used the bottles of stuff that cabelas sells and had good luck. the hardest part was softening it after tanning
