So last week I picked up a used .45 to add to the collection. After an abysmal time on the range with it I gave up and took it back to the LGS to swap it for something else.

I had really been in the market for another .45 but could not really find anything I wanted that was less than $1,000. Not wanting to spend that much just now they had one of those little SW22 Victory target pistols with the threaded barrel. It was priced right and I made the swap.

I had not had my Ruger target 22/45 out in a while, so I took it along with the SW22 and my switch cylinder Ruger Old Army (I have the 45 ACP and 45 LC cylinders for it) out for a little range time.

Now, I had not had the ROA out with the new cylinders since I bought them (working WAY too much).

I spent a few hours shooting the two tack driver 22's and alternating between 45 ACP and light 45 LC rounds in the ROA. It has been a really long time since I shot either 22 or 45 LC.

I literally had one of the best range sessions in recent memory. Plinking with the 22's and then letting the big 45 roar was just a hoot.

I have spent so much time in the past few years shooting 9mm and 45 ACP for combat, that just enjoying range time had become secondary.

I need to slow down and really remember what it is like to enjoy range time and not just train. Even though I got plenty of trigger and sight training with the little 22's.

Just a great day!

As of late it seems like every trip to the range has a purpose, such as testing a new gun to make sure it functions, working on shooting drills, sighting in a rifle, etc. You're right that while those things are necessary, the most fun and lasting memories are from trips where my oldest son and I each bring a few friends, a bunch of guns and just enjoy shooting. Watching my son shoot a CZ 97B that I picked up not too long ago and seeing an ear to ear grin as he went on about how much he loves it was priceless.

Some of the best range trips I have had are usually when i take my Beretta Model 70S .22 and a single action revolver, like my Ruger Vaquero, in .45 Colt. The Bereta is incredibly reliable and surprisingly accurate with most brands of .22 ammo while the Vaquero is just a hoot to shoot!

Yeah man, I love days like that.

I've been stuck in the "shoot with a purpose" rut for a while - chronograph new loads, teach new shooters, etc. etc...

But last week when I was home with family I took my mom and younger brother out to shoot some 38 specials through my 686-1. What a great time we had just shooting clays (I like shooting the little leftover chunks) and such at 15 yards. Spent some time on paper and was surprised how well the cheap reman. ammo did. Nothing beats a nice wheelgun for relaxing at the range.

I enjoy every shot I fire, whether training or just messing around. (such as mag dumps [semi] with the AK; it just puts a smile on my face.... ) A friend and I helped train 4 new shooters Sunday, and had a blast!
