Well I leave tommorrow for the long but oh so good journey back to the states. Ive seen that other "range report" that was supposedly written by a marine ( that I think is BULL ), so I thought I would write one based on my experiences. Here goes:
M16/M4- Great weapons. If you keep them clean they will do anything you need it to. If you read some of my replies to threads earlier this year you will see that I disliked the green bullet, but this has changed. I was expecting to much out of it and if you hit a man in the chest he is going down. I was issued am accurized M16 that had a free floating, flutted barrel, and a match grade, two stage trigger as my weapon. I was never able to get a real accuracy test but I believe, with the Black Hills 77grn rounds (M262 Mod1 I believe theyre called), it is a 1 MOA rifle. Overall grade....A
M249- Good weapons, when they work. I was a SAW gunner OIF1 and I love the weapon. The SAW is a great idea and I believe it gives good firepower in a small package. The only problem is that they are getting old and worn out. We have done some things to help out, like replacing the barrel/gas regulator with a one piece design that improves handling and reliability. Still a few were problamatic, one we dubbed the Jammo-matic 9000. I believe a lot has to do with training. You dont lightly squeeze the trigger like a rifle, you PULL it. Being light on the trigger can cause malfunctions. Overall grade....C+
M240B- Awesome weapon. The weapon I prefer when Im a gunner on a humvee. Extremely reliable, high rate of fire, accurate, controlable, and 7.62. My vote for best weapon in theater. Not as powerfull as some of its brothers, but is easy to put lots of lead on target. Overall grade...A+
M2- The big boy. Its a .50 caliber machine gun! Theres nothing like shooting at the bad guys through buildings. Reliable, accurate, but a little hard to control for smaller targets at range. Overall grade....A
MK19- I dont have a lot of experience with this monster but it is great at clearing woodlines. Lots of power and lots of range. High maintanence and requires its own type of lubrication. Overall grade....B
M9- Quicky climbing my want to own list. A lot are carried by people who dont take good care of them and just generally abuse them, yet they still function. Good reliability and accuracy. The military mags are CRAP!!!! Worst magazines ever. Whoevers idea it was to buy these mags should be shot. Overall grade....A
M203- We didnt use them much, but it is cool to have a grenade launcher on your rifle. A lot less of an impact then I thought it would have, on par with a hand grenade. Still wouldnt want to be near one when it hits though.
Humvee- Great trucks. Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'. We put these trucks through hell and they still run. I dont like taking these out in sector as a good IED will tear them to pieces. Overall grade....A
M2 Bradley- My beloved baby tank. These things have saved my life on a few occassions. We used these a lot as Im in the #1 IED sector in Iraq. Nearly 400 in my AO in one year. We had a 3 count 155mm shells IED go off right next to the track, blowing a crater 3 feet deep, and it did only superficial scratches to the vehicle (and gave me a concussion). They also have great firepower. 800 rounds of 7.62 and 300 rounds of 25mm loaded and ready to rock. The 25mm cannon is the best urban vehicle weapon because you can engage enemy on one floor and not destroy the whole building. 25mm AP rounds also blow a basketball sized hole in a terrorist! More mobile in city streets than a tank as it can pivot, and carries 6 soldiers in the back. Overall grade....A+
M1A1 Abrams- The king of the land. Nothing can stand up to it in face to face combat. Super armored, fast, and has more guns than it needs. I was attached to a tank company for the first half of the deployment and got to work with these beasts. They call us infantry "crunchies" for the sound we make when run over. But I say my Javelin wont let them get that close. Overall grade....A+
