Took my new S&W 500 to an IPSC practice last night and everyone got to shoot a round. The unanimous decision of the handgun is that its

FRIGGIN AWESOME!!! :D

Ok, ok I know that isn't a very technical range report so I'll get try to elaborate. First off, I think this handgun has a more anticipated recoil then it really has. S&W did a really good job with the compensator and to be honest I felt more recoil out of my snub nose 357 magnum then I did from the 500. Of course a lot of that is due to the mass of this wheel gun. All together though it didn't seem all that heavy and the 4" model that I have balanced really well in my hand.

I was shooting BullsEye's unjacketed 350 gr lead ball out of it last night. This may have something to do with the light recoil and as such I will pick up some of the JHP 450 gr and try that as well. I didn't do an "official" group of shots last night, but we sure as shiola blasted the hell out of a bowling pin at 20 feet. The 350 gr lead ball completely penetrated the base of the bowling pin with a nice neet insert hole and a much larger splintered hole on the back end. NICE!!!

Anyway, this handgun may not get much use seeing the price of ammo, but when the 50 S&W rnd gets more production and the price lowers, this will be a common friend at the range.

Oh and one of the IPSC guys brought his 14 year old son along. You should of seen the look on his face when he shot that thing. PRICELESS!!!!

You can feed the beast a few roll your own rounds for between .11 and .15 cents per round for cast and plated, .36 cents for Sierra jacketed, XTP's for a bit less.

Just like the recoil, costs associated with shooting aren't nearly as bad as reputed.

You will find, after shooting the 500, many other things will now seem less exciting.

I scoped mine with a Trijicon Reflex II, fantastic combination.

I have 16 different loads worked up just waiting for my new chrono to show up from Shooters Connection. It should be here tomorrow :D

I am thinking at this point, the 500 might be the only cartridge I like as much as the 10mm for cool factor and all around versatility.

You can load it from mild to wild and it still leaves an indelible grin.
