Range Report: Springfield Armory GI Mil-Spec .45 ACP...

I picked up one of these with the better sights and the lowered and flared port just a few week ago. It is consistent with this report. Reliable, tight, and accurate. The trigger was great as well. I say was, because I replaced the hammer with a McCormick unit to fit the S&A beavertail I installed and the trigger pull went all mushy.

Never fear, the experts on this forum and on 1911 forums set me straight and after an hour with some good stones and gauges the trigger is once again crisp and very nice.

I'll post before and after pics when I get home from work.

This is deffinately a great pistol to use as is or to build on.

Mrrs. Camp and Tuner: Thanks for the info.

It sounds as though I won't have to worry about it for some time, if at all. And if I do the little fitting required won't be a problem.

springfield mil spec gi

I have been trying to research the springfield mel-spec gi .45 for some time. Particularly the Pw9701L model which is the 13+1 model. I have found many reviews for the mil-spec but unfortunatly not for this particular model. Most of the reviews for the mil-spec have been good, with a few exceptions such as the triger and sights. I was already planning on adding better sights (bomar style if possible) and a trigger. My question to all (since you guys seem far more of experts than I) is if anyone has any knowledge of this model and what kind of sights and trigger can be put in?
thanks in advance

Triggers should be the standard widebody triggers, not standard singlestack 1911. Go to www.brownells.com and take a look. I'd also call them and ask, and they can tell you what will fit it. Sights will be any that you chose. Be aware that most sights, the Bomars included, will require a gunsmith to mill the cut or cuts and fit the sights to the slide. Other internals beyong triggers I'm not sure about.

shadow walker...I had the maiden firing with my just acquired Springfield GI Hi-Cap tonight. Slide cycles nice and smoothly and is snugly fitted. Barrel bushing is snug with no play in the front of the barrel. The rear of the barrel locks up solid... no play there either. Only fired off hand at about 4 yards, but the results were dead on in that test. Cosmetics are good. Rollmarks look good. Very clean machining inside the slide. This is a really impressive gun, expecially for the money... for $475 brand spanking new. That's a steal, I think. I'm not much into Parkerized finishes, but I can live with it until I refinish it someday.

Didn't have much time, but gave it a good cleaning, then I ran one magazine through the gun, 13+1 of Win USA 230 gr. FMJ and everything went as hoped... perfect functioning, even if just 1 mag - the first one yet. I'll probably run a couple hundred rounds of FMJ through it, then progress to my typical JHP defense loads. The gun felt great to shoot and accuracy is perfectly good for defense use. I don't even mind the lack of sights! :uhoh: If the reliability continues, it'll become one of my nightstand guns for sure. Might even upgrade the sights and fire control components. It sure is nice to have 14 rounds of 230 gr. Golden Sabers on tap in a sweet shooting 1911!

I could agree more with Stephen... these GI's are great, economical 1911's. And if you're into trying out hi caps... this seems an ideal way to go. Now I need to get my hands on some more mags!
