I went to the range today with a few pistols that I really haven’t shot too much. One, in particular, was very impressive, my Star Mod 30MI.

It’s a DA/SA 15+1 9 MM. The thing is a tank. It’s all steel and weighs like a CZ 52. It has a weird safety in that the hammer will cock and fall while on safe. The safety lever cams the firing pin out of the hammer’s reach rather than blocking the hammer’s fall.

Shooting-wise: What a monster! I’d only shot it very little before this, just to make sure it functioned. Today, I ran about 200 rounds of all types through it.

The sights were adjusted all the way to the left. I shot two rounds, which were way off (I had to try) and then put the rear sight dead center. My first shot hit a tennis ball sized rock 50 feet away on the berm. The pistol was right on and I adjusted no more. This pistol is one accurate deal. Double taps are a dream because the gun weighs a bit, minimizing recoil a great amount. No jams or issues of any kind. The DA and SA triggers are beautifully smooth, the gun is comfortable in the hand and the sights are great. Clean up took a few minutes; the thing is easily broken down. This would probably be a good pistol for someone with weaker or arthritic hands, someone who is recoil sensitive. The slide is really easy to rack, the trigger is sweet and, as I’ve already said, recoil is minimal. I have had it for sale in the classifieds here on this site (money shortage!) but have changed my mind since today’s range visit. This is definite keeper. Total thumbs up for the Star. I have found my hi-cap 9 MM and am content.

Another relatively unused gun I have is an original Whitney .22, one in it’s original box w/papers. I’ve left it alone as I have another Whitney for a shooter. I just wanted to make sure this one functioned well. It does that. It functions better than well, actually, more like perfectly.

All I can say is that these things are as good as any Buckmark or Ruger or Smith & Wesson .22 semi-auto. The trigger is perfect and the thing doesn’t miss. Not one jam with 3 types of ammo, either. I’ve raved about Wolverines here in the past so I won’t now, but, rave, rave, rave! It’s too bad there aren’t many around because not too many folks have any experience with them and don’t have anything other than my word to go by. All I can say is that if you can snag one, snag it. You’ll be very pleasantly impressed. Plus, ten years from now, you could sell it for quite a bit more than you paid for it. Not only is it solid equity, it’s a great shooter, too.

If you’re interested, I’m also posting something about two revolvers in the revolver section: a Double Nine convertible and a tiny US Revolver Co double action .22 LR revolver.

Woad, I bought a Star 30MI almost twenty years ago. I thought it was a fine pistol. I rashly solt a bunch of my guns when I retired and the Star was one of them. But it was certainly a first class shooter. Wish I still had it.
