I took my new M&P15A out to the range today. It was a bit chilly and windy, but i still had a great time. I had never even shot an AR before, what a blast! I went through 80 rounds fairly quickly. One of my first "groups" of three was one single hole in the target. although i was only shooting at 25 yards off hand just to get a feel for the new gun, it was still very very very accurate.

Both the magazine that came with it worked great as well as the grey follower bushmaster i bought from gander mtn.

Which mag is supposed to be better, green follower (came with the gun) or grey follower? and why?

I did however experience malfunctions with .223 ammo. i had 20 rounds of remington umc (green and white box) and 60 rounds of prvi partizan 5.56mm m193 ball, which worked perfect out of both magazines. sometimes the .223 was fine, and sometimes it would "short stroke", at least thats what i think it was doing. it seemed like the bolt wasnt going back far enough to get behind the next round. this happened 4 times out of the 20 rounds. every time it happened a quick pull on the charging handle put another round in perfect. i even shot a few really quick right in a row and it didnt do it then, so i dont think it was a mechanical problem, i think it was the lower pressure .223.

i called s&w to ask them if, from experience, no .223 ammo would work in this gun chambered for the nato round, or if some would, or if it all should. he told me to monitor how bad it was with the .223, and get at least 300 rounds through the gun before i start to draw conclusions. he also said to try as many different types of ammo as i could to see if maybe it was just that brand.

other than that the troy rear folding sight came loose after about 40 rounds, and i didnt have a screwdriver to really tighten it, i used my fingernail just so it didnt fall off or anything, ill have to go back and see if it continues to shake loose, or if it was missed on the assembly line or something.

i love the gun though, i just need more ammo!! i checked wal mart, they had remington umc green and white box for 9.23/40. which is even better price than that 5.56, but since i just got back from the range where it wouldnt cycle, i didnt pick any up. i was surprised they didnt have any wwb in .223, there are a few wal marts around here though ill check the other ones.

oh and my M&P 40 performed flawlessly as usual, not one problem in over 500 rounds now.

nobody knows anything about the magazines? i hate ar15.com i dont want to have to ask there. it will just turn into a mall ninja battle about who cut someones heart out with a grey one when the green one woulda broke.
