I just got this from newsmax.com (I know). But it's still distressing:

My name is Tracey Bunn and my husband is former Atlanta Police Officer Raymond Bunn. I gave birth to our fifth child -- a baby boy -- just a few months ago.

But Ray wasn’t allowed to go to the hospital with me. Because the Fulton County District Attorney was holding him in jail that night -- and is trying to put Ray in prison for the rest of his life!

More than three years ago, on July 14, 2002, Ray and his partner were patrolling the Buckhead bar district area of Atlanta. It was about 3:00am when they heard the sound of breaking glass and a car alarm go off -- and saw a man jump out of the shattered passenger window of nearby car.

Ray and his partner began shouting over and over: “Police! Stop! Police! Stop!” But the man ignored them and jumped into the back seat of a nearby Chevy Tahoe SUV. Both Ray and his partner drew their weapons and slowly advanced towards the SUV. Suddenly the driver of the SUV, a man named Corey Ward, punched the gas pedal and started driving straight at my husband.

Ray was trapped between the right front of his cruiser and the oncoming car. With the SUV just a few feet away from him, Ray had no choice. He fired off two shots from his service revolver and tried to jump out of the way. But he didn’t make it. The SUV struck his knee.

And the worst was still yet to come.

Corey Ward, the driver of the SUV, died at the scene from the gunshot wound to his head. Ray was devastated -- it was the first time in his police career that my husband had ever been forced to kill a man. But he knows that he did the right thing.

Police are trained to use force if they feel their lives are in danger. Which Ray’s life clearly was. But anti-police activists in Atlanta didn’t agree. You see, Corey Ward was a young black man. Radicals in the black community accused my husband of being a rogue, racist cop.

They held demonstrations in front of the police station calling for a murder indictment against Ray.

Even Johnny Cochran -- the notorious attorney who defended O.J. Simpson -- showed up in Atlanta to stage a protest!

Ray and his fellow police officers -- both black and white -- couldn’t believe it, as my husband was being labeled a “racist” for defending himself in the line of duty!

Then, after everything we’d just been through, Ray’s National Guard unit, he is a sergeant, was called up for deployment to Iraq.

It about broke my heart to say good-bye to him. But God brought Ray home safely after a year-long tour of duty. Our family was finally all back together. And we were all so excited when I found out I was expecting our fifth child!

Then without warning, the Fulton County District Attorney announced that he was indicting Ray for the murder of Corey Ward.

That’s right -- three and a half years after my husband was nearly killed by Corey Ward’s SUV, and after a year long tour in Iraq, the DA finally bowed to pressure from local activists and indicted Ray.

If convicted, Ray could be imprisoned for the rest of life -- just for doing his job!

...

Anyone know anything more about this case?

Considering there's no possible way shooting at an approaching driver & vehicle will stop it in time, I wonder why anyone would waste a second shooting when they should be moving out of the way as quickly as possible. Not that I don't think this cop is being screwed over.

That newsmax article doesnt tell the whole story (big suprise). Newsmax is a joke.

Look what it says here..
Bunn left the Atlanta police force last year, two years after he is accused of murdering 18-year-old Corey Ward in July 2002. Bunn was working undercover when he says he confronted Ward, weapon drawn, because he believed the teen was driving a stolen SUV. The truck actually belonged to Ward's mother. Witnesses in the vehicle said Ward panicked when he saw Bunn and his undercover partner pointing guns at them, not knowing the pair were police officers. Bunn says when Ward drove the SUV directly at him, he shot in self-defense, killing the teenager.

If I'm lawfully walking to my car and I notice some plain clothes guys coming up to me in a threatening manner with guns drawn, I'd probably jump in the car and nail the gas too. The thought wouldnt cross my mind that they were cops.. I'd think they were carjackers about to shoot me for my Camaro.

It's like the whole no-knock warrant thing people are always crying about on this board. If a LEO doesnt identify himself as such, how are citizens supposed to know that it's the cops and not carjackers or home invaders?

how are citizens supposed to know that it's the cops and not carjackers or home invaders?

Yup. That selectively omitted part about being undercover and not ID themselves as cops really sheds all kinds of new light on this, eh? I'm sure anybody would react the same way, or pull a CCW and get shot/shot them, etc.

Messy messy.....

The Local Atlanta Media Gets it Wrong Yet again.

The Perp’s and Yes I say PERPS because that is what they are! Were not lawfully walking back to their car. They were breaking into cars. The cops saw the person half in the car window!!! The police NEVER thought the individuals were stealing the SUV. The police saw them running back to the SUV to get away. The occupants of the SUV saw the blue lights on the police car. Two occupants said in their police statements that night they KNEW they were police because they were YELLING, STOP POLICE and they had POLICE BADGES AROUND their necks!! And instead of exiting the parking lot which was behind the police car and they had plenty of room to do, the driver decided to turn the wheel and drive at the police officers. Why did he do this, who knows... maybe it was because they were just caught breaking into a car or maybe because they had stolen items, drugs and other items in the car. This indictment was brought on by presser from so called "activists" in the community or per haps by the fact that the DA's wife and the prep driving the car's grandmother were friends! The FBI, GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigations) and the Atlanta OPS (Office of Professional Standards= to Internal Affairs in other departments), All reviewed this case and all concluded that this was a justifiable shoot. In fact at the January hearing to have the indictment thrown out the FBI agent that reviewed the case said in his testimony that he called the DA's office 4 times when he heard that this was going to the Grand Jury (with no call ever returned) because he wanted to see "what evidence had fallen from the sky" that would make the DA bring this up for indictment.. The hearing is on a continuance until March 14th. I hope that justice will prevail in this case. This is a good man, he has spent his entire life in service protecting people and their freedom. In the Marine Corp as a police office and then again as a solider with Army. I hope that all of you will join me in supporting Officer Bunn and his family.

There's your answer

So is that a reason to charge a police officer with Murder and Felony Murder? Which in the great state of GA carries a mandatory Life Sentence!!
