A Senior Member named, RBernie, posted a message a few years ago about his Remington 1100 failing to feed. Like rbernie's my 1100 will only feed one round from the magazine, then the last-round-bolt-hold open engages and locks the other shells out of the chamber. rbernie said he found some information on this site, but I haven't been able to find it. If anyone knows anything about this, please tell me. And if rbernie still comes to this site, please let him know about my question.

he still comes here often. I made a trade with em today. PM him he is extremely helpful guy. Its rbernie with lower case if it matters or not for search.

Thanks 3pairs12. I am new to the forum thing, and I didn't know about private messaging. FAQ explained everything. Thanks for the help.

anytime man and welcome to THE HIGH ROAD. this place is a wealth of info as you have started to realize. goodluck on the 1100

The 1100 is designed to lock open after each shell is fired.

The new shell is ejected from the magazine and strikes a catch at the back of the lifter, which releases the bolt and drives the new shell into the chamber.

If the magazine spring is weak, it won't drive the new shell into the catch hard enough.

There can be other causes.

In his book on gunsmithing shotguns Sweeney suggests (among other things) installing a 3" lifter in place of the 2 3/4" lifter.

It would be difficult for me to describe how to do all this without pictures. I suggest going to a good gunsmith. 1100s are so common that any gunsmith will probably know how to fix it, especially if it's a lifter problem.

I just saw this thread. Didn't know I could become so infamous. :D

I've exchanged PMs with Brandon and explained to him what I'd learned form this forum, namely what AO described above.

It is interesting to note that I could NOT get the 1100 to lift when hand cycled but it was 100% when fired. I just stopped worryin' about it and shot it. Mine was a Magnum, by the way - it already was set up for 3" shells.

FWIW, that shotgun has moved on to other hands. I now have an 870 and a S&W 1500 in 12ga, and an 1100 in 20ga.

Just as an aside, putting in a 3" lifter does not convert a 2 3/4 " 1100 to be able to fire 3" shells.
Roger that.

But what, other than the lifter and barrel itself, is different between the standard and Magnum actions?

(I am such a moron about this stuff....)

The barrels are different on 3" and 2-3/4" guns. The 3" barrels have one hole, the 2-3/4" two gas holes/ports. I know what Remington says/said, but every receiver I checked weighed the same and measured the same, including the ejection port. I admit I did not measure them all, but I would estimate I checked at least 10 magnums and 20 standards. And I am not talking a bathroom scale and a ruler, either. The action springs, the ones in the stock, are different. The magnum spring is softer. The action bar sleeve/assembly is different also. If I remember right the magnum is heavier.
For about the last 20+ years I have been running a 12 gauge 1100, 2-3/4", circa 1964 vintage, with a 3" Remington "Steel Only"' barrel (which appears to be exactly like every other 3" chambered Remington 1100 barrel, including the as delivered port size) installed for waterfowl. Remington recommended this set up for 2-3/4" guns for steel shot. I did not change the spring or the sleeve. I did have to drill out the gas port a few thousandths to obtain reliable cycling, and that was as per Remington's instructions when I first got the barrel. I have used it with all kinds of 3" shells, and it will not function with anything less than very stiff 2-3/4" or 3" loads. That's okay with me, because I think it's easier on the gun/receiver. The action barely opens enough to function rather than slamming into the buffer. I bought 2 buffers years ago, and installed one, but I have only used the 3" barrel since (other guns for other game(s)), and the buffer still looks new, far different than when I ran the 2-3/4" barrels.
