I have a .222 Rem die that's in a old cardboard RCBS box, and appear from the markings to be a group M die, I've looked but I don't' see any listing for a current or past group that high with RCBS.

Are they custom class dies like the X dies? or competition dies?

You have a lime colored box that goes back to Fred Huntington, the early dies by RCBS did not have the year of manufacturing, the early dies had a code A, B, and then there was M, forget contacting RCBS, they do not know the codes.

After the lime colored box came the green colored box, then came the green plastic box with round corners and edges. What does this mean, your dies are 50+ years old.

I have 8 sets, some boxes lime colored, some green, special dies/custom are stamped 'S' and 'X', how custom? If there is a difference it is subtle.

OH
So, either you bought the usual calibers or paid more the the limited runs
Yeah, it's a lighter green cardboard box, not the usual hunter green RCBS box

No, in the Big Inning RCBS sold their dies and packaged them in fiber boxes that were lime green, there were two different sizes, the small box was used for two die sets, the larger box was used for 3 die pistol/straight wall cases, then the lime color box was replaced with the dark green/Hunters green fiber box, after the dark green came light green plastic, by the time plastic appeared RCBS started stamping dies with the year of manufacturing. again, RCBS does not have code conversion for date of manufacturing.

The boxes were one box fits all, they used rubber ink type stamps to identify contents. A friend was going to load a few hundred 300 Win Mags when he realized he did not have the reloading dies, so, I grabbed a set and took them to him, when I got there he explained to me he had a die he could not identify or remember what it fit, it was in the hunter green fiber box, Anyhow, I explained to him his die was a small base 300 Win Mag die stamped 300 BAR, he gave me the die and he kept the box, I do not believe the BAR dies came in fiber boxes, but for color I would like to have added the green box.
