Before I get started I want make it clear that I really like all the equipment mentioned in this post and I am in no way trying to disparage it. I just want to share an odd situation that came up and maybe save others some of the frustration I went through.

A couple days ago I was forming 300 Blackout brass from .223 (R-P headstamp range pickups). I had cut the brass, chamfered, deburred, and was using my Hornady LNL AP press to lube, deprime, and form/size. I had an RCBS lube die in station 1, and my Hornady sizing die in station 2. About every 3 out of 5 pieces would prevent the shellplate from rotating when I raised the handle. If I jiggled the handle a bit, I would hear a primer drop into the bucket and the shellplate would then rotate. I figured I didn't have the decapping pin adjusted correctly so I lowered it. Same problem. I lowered it some more. Still no luck. It sure looked like I had MORE than enough pin sticking past the die, so I double checked the die height and lowered until it was definitely touching the shellplate. Still the same problem. In frustration, I removed the shellplate and held a case by hand so I could see exactly what was happening. I lowered the handle, and as I raised it I held the case. Guess what. The decapping pin had removed the primer, but the primer was stuck on the end of the pin. So all along it was depriming just fine, but the primers were being pulled back in partially when the ram lowered. A minute or two with a file on the tip of the decapping pin and everything was running smooth again.

Anyway, just hoping this helps save somebody else some frustration.

im pretty sure one die maker uses a spring loaded pin to prevent this from happening. Not sure who it was though.

Uh, how are you depriming/sizing in station 2? Or does the RCBS lube die deprime as well? The way the LNL is made I dont understand how you could possibly deprime in station 2.

Good tip!

First thing I do with a new die is polish the end of the de-capping pin on a buffing wheel.

It will save you a lot of grief sooner or later.

RCBS makes a universal de-priming die that is spring loaded, I use it on my LNL-AP for all my de-priming needs. It works without fail.

I use the 27 through 45 heavy duty die so this is the die I would recommend since your cutting the necks off your .223 cases to make blackouts.

This heavy duty spring loaded die litteraly shoots the primer out of the case and down the tube into my bucket.

It's the primer anvil sticking on the end of the decapping pin. Follow rc's advice. You may even have to mod the shape a little, but try just polishing first.

That's a die (pin) problem not a press issue. Like already said, polish the end to keep it from sticking. I use the RCBS Universal de-primer if I'm just depriming. It's spring loaded like mentioned. This is assuming your depriming in station 1. The only way to use station 2 to deprimer is to remove the primer seating assembly. Then you will have primers and residue every where.

The lube die deprimes as well.

that was a die problem not a press problem

Never said it was a press problem, but for all the clip/magazine guys, I changed the title of the thread.

Yeah. I know. That's what I posted.

Too late. I did that before I posted.

I had the same problem when I first started using RCBS lube. It is sticky like syrup or glue. I made sure the pin was rounded and lube free. If they stick now it's usually because I bumped the pin with my ape hands/lubed case neck and transferred lube to the pin.

Like. KS said I post #4, the problem lies below. The hole to the left of the primer station is at station 1. There is no hole for the recapping pin at station 2. I had this same problem earlier and Hornady tech support wasn't much help. I finally had the Ah-Ha moment myself

Like I said in post #9, I was depriming in station 1.
