Hi All,

My defenses are slowly, slowly weakening and I think I may end up getting a Pardner in 20 ga. I want to use it for squirrel and maybe deer if it shoots slugs halfway decent plus survival preparedness. The question is, which choke should I get, Full or Modified? How far will the Modified shoot for squirrel hunting and can I shoot slugs out of a Full choke?

Thanks in advance!

Get mod. At least you can use it for birds as well as everything else I have used slug out of a mod Choke and many a squirrel has died to one of my 12 gauges with a mod choke and bird

Modified, most definitely. I shoot modified 90 percent of the time. I'll sometimes put the I/C choke in for modified patterns with steel shot during teal season, but mostly shoot modified on ducks, geese, doves, small game. Now, if I shot quail, I'd have more use for IC, but I don't. I NEVER shoot full choke now days. If you want a full pattern from a mod choke, you can likely find a steel shot load that will give you that. But, for squirrel and rabbit, you don't need it. You'll want the most open choke choice possible for rifled slugs, too, though slugs will work from a full choke.

The one reason I can see for full choke anymore is turkey. If you ever go turkey hunting, just load up with hevi shot 4s or 6s after patterning 'em to verify of course. They should shoot pretty tight in a modified choke.
