My state's deer season is coming to a close soon, Feb 10th. I do plan to hunt deer until it closes, but not exactly trying to shoot another one, I got a decent 8pt and my wife got a doe earlier this week. So for us we are ok as far as freezer filling goes. One more big deer would be great, but not really needed.

Well she mentioned that we haven't had squirrel in a long time. We both like to eat squirrel and our deer place is covered in them, they are still in season to mid March. I hadn't shot my 22lr in a long time and I needed to get it ready. It's a Ruger American Target 22lr, has the laminate wood stock, and stainless "bull" barrel, with a Hawke 22lr specific 3-9x40 scope. I'm using CCI Mini Mag 36gr HP.

Yesterday I went to check the zero and I was pretty happy with the results and squirrels are gonna be in big trouble. Shot first at 54 yards shot 3 times and then moved to the more realistic distance of squirrel shooting we will have at 35 yards. We plan to hunt them from our elevated tree stands and shoot them when they are on the ground. Taking headshots only.

I know, I know 3 shots and then 1 shot don't really tell me much, but I have previously shot the same setup and same lot # of ammo before extensively and it's proven to be consistent accurate ammo in my rifle. I'm glad I got another full sleeve of this lot # I'll be set for a while. This was just to really make sure the scope hadn't got bumped or anything with all the shuffling inside the safe with deer rifles coming in and out. Now for the wife to get her 10-22 out and check it out.

I'm more inpressed that your wife hunts and cooks what you guys kill than I am about your efforts for squirrel hunting. I hope you realize how fortunate you are to have a wife like that!
Thank you so much, and my buddies at work have told me the same thing. I definitely do realize how lucky I am for it. We really do enjoy hunting together. Don't hurt she's easy on the eyes too ;)

I've squirrel hunted before several times as an adult, but as a kid squirrel, rabbit, and dove was the only hunting I did. It's been several years since I have and she never has, so we trying to get ready and I'm sure it'll be lots of fun.

This time of year my FIL and I hunt squirrels with dogs. I prefer a shotgun he prefers a .22. good luck. I assume you are still hunting. If you find a tree with worn out holes on it try either sitting in silence for a bit then grinding quarters together to make a chewing sound to lure them out OR of legal where you are at smack the tree with a dead blow hammer to scare them out.

Our squirrel season ends at the end of Feb. Right now the squirrel rut is on, and it is not unusual to see 5 or 6 squirrels chasing each other thru the tree tops. My squirrel hunting at this time of year is with my .36 flint lock. If a squirrel stops within 50 yards, he is in trouble cause this rifle is deadly on squirrels and the occasional coyote that may show up.

I need to get out too. Deer season ended a couple of weeks ago but I can hunt squirrel until the end of February. I use the time more to just get out of the house and scout for turkey season.
