Please let me hear your thoughts about ATI 1911 clones that you have personal experience with. You don’t have to own one, but pleasemlinit your comments to at least what you know from handling and/or shooting one. My specific interest is the .45 ACP Commander, but comments about other sizes and calibers in the generic line of pistols are also welcome.

The reason Inam interested is to build an inexpensive .22LR conversion. A lightly used Commander size Marvel Unit 2 is already purchased and on its way to me. I would love a high end lower unit to go with it like a used Colt, but I am just not going to spend that kind of money at this time. I have been scouring the Gun Broker and gun.deals listings for a week. Some higher end pistols start off reasonable but quickly climb out of sight near the end of the auction whether new or used. Even RIAs are more than I want to spend.

Considering the accuracy mainly comes from the upper assembly, will an ATI give me a decent base for Marvel slide, etc.? I am not opposed to some modest upgrades over time I have some really nice grips for it. I would consider a Cerakoting down the road. Trigger and other internal could all be in play for improvement. Just not right at first.

I understand that the Marvel unit should work just as well with a 9mm 1911 Commander lower as with ..45 ACP. I already have a nice 9mm SR1911 9mm Commander and could just use that with the Marvel upper, but I don’t want to be going back and forth between uppers. The SR1911 is my number one range toy and don’t want to have to make the switch to shoot it.

I have found the ATI for $329 in a free shipping, no CC fee, no tax situation in either .45ACP and 9mm. The 9mm is out of stock, and I am leaning to the .45. I’ve never had one, and this is my chance to dive in for cheap.

What do you folks think?

Well I couldn't wait for you doofuses ( :) just fooling with you guys) to come up with some encouraging information. I ordered the ATI .45 ACP commander size 1911 to go with the Marvel conversion unit for $329 bottom line. No CC fee, to tax, no shipping fee. Hard to beat. I have spare Bushnell TRS-25 tubular red dot and a Sightmark Mini Pro Spec open reflex red dot so I also ordered mounting plates for the .45 cal slide and the .22 cal conversion slide. I will put the open optic on the .45 and the closed one on the .22.

In case anyone is interest, that price is at Smoky Mountain Guns and Ammo.

But please, it is not too late to tell me what you think of the gun. If you have any comments on the purchase, don’t hesitate to offer them.

I purchased the ATI commander length pistol in 2011, and have been happy with it. Made by Shooter's Arms in the Philippines, I have run 300 to 500 rounds through it with no drama. Only stoppage came from a nasty old cartridge that was corroded and probably never should have been loaded. Only complaint is dented empties as the port does not seem to have been relieved. Good gun, especially for that kind of money.
