I have been using PSA uppers on AR-15 builds. However, when reading the specs on the PSA 7.62x39 uppers there is a note stating that they will not fit on a Mil-spec Ar-15 lower. I am looking for suggestions on a compatible upper in this chambering, or, learning if simple modifications will allow the pairing.

Some comments I have read seemed to indicate that reliable magazine feeding is the issue but that specific magazines eliminate that problem. Information on the best magazines and uppers to use in a 7.62x39 build would help me keep the project moving forward. Thanks for your help.

My PSA7.62x39 upper works perfectly on my AR-15 lower. I use D&H 10rd mags that I got PSA. Never had a pro0blem or failure to function.

I have an older PSA upper that works 100% with a standard lower and cproducts/asc/d&h.

I think the misfeed reputation came from before dedicated mags came out for them. I have not heard of any uppers made in the last 10 years that have had issues to my recollection.

BCA has really been stepping up their game, and I think the side charging upper fits the 7.62x39 well. I plan on getting one to go with my PSA.

With that said, their standard are 7.62 uppers are pretty low priced now

Mine is a basic AR Stoner upper from Midway on an Aero lower. Like the others, it has been really reliable with the C Products magazines.

Since I do shoot steel cased ammo, I did use a Wolff heavier than standard hammer spring and an enhanced firing pin from Black Rifle Arms.

Stay safe.

My 7.62x39 is a Midway USA special AR Stoner, its made by Bear Creek Arsenal. It has been 100% reliable from day one and fantastically accurate. Not with steel case stuff but with the American made Hornady, Federal, or my reloads.

It's the cheapest AR upper I have but it's also one of the most accurate. Too bad the Federal Fusion ammo has been discontinued as IMO its the best hunting ammo available. I use the Speer Gold Dot 123gr .310 bullet (also discontinued) with CFE BLK its a sub MOA rifle for 3 shots everytime I shoot it. Also likes the .308 135gr Hornady FTX bullet.

Then you're looking at KS-47 uppers, which are for the proprietary PSA KS-47 platform. They also (and many other manufacturers) sell AR uppers with 7.62x39 innards.

Thanks for all the information. I rechecked PSA’s website - you are correct. I was looking at the ‘KS-47’ uppers which had the note. They do show availability on one model of a ‘standard‘ upper that I had missed the first time. Looks like several good options exist - choices are always appreciated.

Thanks again for the help.

My AR in 7.62x39 is a low budget pieces and parts build that’s 100% reliable and shoots 123 gr Hornady FMJ over Reloader 7 just fine. I’ve been looking for another AK, but am questioning why I don’t just buid another AR in the same caliber. Also use C-Products mags and they function just fine.

I bought a Bear Creek Arsenal (BCA) 16 inch barrel complete uppder a couple years ago. Mated it to an Anderson lower with standard military trigger.

It is an accurate shooter with regular Wolf brand FMJ and feeds reliable with DuraMags.

My issue with this BCA 7.62 x 39mm upper assembly is firing pin failures. I have broke two of the BCA issue firing pins. The original lasted about 70 rounds before the tip broke off. The replacement they sent me under warranty lasted 25 rounds. Fortunately I had purchased a Black Rifle Arms (BRA) brand 7.62 x 39mm firing pin and bolt to have on hand as back-up; these have worked flawlessly as replacement parts.

I have ordered another BRA firing pin and bolt as well as a couple other small parts to have as replacements - I have given up on using the Bear Creek firing pin and bolt.

I had a similar experience with my first BCA enhanced firing pin. They sent me a warranty replacement, but I just put in one from RedX and no worries. Bolts have been fine for about 700 rounds combined so far, all steel cased ammo.

I have 2 bear creek 7.62x39 uppers. On PSA lowers. Perfect fit. I don't shoot steel case. So my firing pins have held up fine.
Same with me on the steel cased ammo. i reload brass 7.62x39 for my AR and leave the steel cased stuff for the AK/SKS rifles.

I tried some .223 Wolf steel stuff in an Olympic AR15 and had to pound out an empty case with a dowel rod. That experience kept me from shooting steel cased ammo in any of my AR’s.
