On a 1980 mfg date model 700 there are two receiver plugs on the left side at the rear of the receiver. What is the purpose of having threaded holes there? The factory stock covers about 1/2 of each screw head so if something were to be attached there the stock would need to be modified.

They are there for attaching a receiver sight.

Yes, the stock has to be cut out to clear the sight base.

Those holes are for mounting peep sights on the receiver. Many Marlins and Winchesters also came with the receiver pre-drilled and tapped. The spacing usually matches the Williams Foolproof receiver sights.

I remember seeing an episode of "Sky King" where the heroes had either Winchester 70 or Remington 700 bolt action rifles with peep sights. They seemed to be as common as scope sights in the 1950s and 1960s.

And they still remain a wonderful, rugged, instinctive alternative to a scope.
