Recessed Crowned Muzzle...your thoughts?

I have the S&W 617 with 8 3/8" barrel, and soon a 686 with matching barrel length. I am wondering if having the muzzle crown recessed would be worth the money as far as improving accuracy. The theory behind it makes sense to me but theories don't always work as good as they look on paper it seems...

All the Smiths I have owned have provided me with very good to exceptional accuracy with no work to the muzzle crown.

Seems more like a fix for a problem that does not exist. Now if there was damage to the crown , or a burr or some other irregularity ,that would be a different story.

I was just wondering as S&W offers that as part of their Outdoor gunsmithing package. My 617 seems to be pretty spot on but I figured if I can make it better, it might be worth it. Especially once the 357 comes along.

Maybe the service is there more for protecting the crown. A recessed crown is less likely to get dinged in rough use.

The way my 686 shoots now in 100% stock condition , even if they offered me the service for free I still would not do it!

Agree with Yodavader, the recess is there to protect the real crown in case you are in the habit of knocking your gun barrel into hard objects. The real crown affecting the shooting is only the actual bullet exit which is maybe a tiny bit more than the depth of the rifling.
