ReCoil What am I in For

Don't forget, if you load your own you can make any rifle more pleasant to shoot (up to a point, might not work for 50BMG...)

I had an old load in 300 win mag, 110 gr .308 hollowpoint bullet, that was high velocity but astonishingly low recoil. Worked great on pumpkins.

So if all else fails, get light bullets with a light load, that'll take the sting out of it.

Good luck with the health, eat well and smile! Every day is a gift.

im not a fan of ported rifles because of the noise but have to admit they work. I bought a 7stw last year that came from the factory ported. First day out with it with top end loads i though something was wrong with my gun or loads as I was expecting even with the porting a whole lot more recoil. Its loud but recoil is about the same as a lightweight 243. Its almost so light that its scary.

Is the extra velocity/energy worth the pain?

I found out long ago that improving my hunting skills got me close enough that I didn't need an ICBM to drop a deer. And my shooting skills worked a lot better when I was not worrying about a mighty poke.

If you tried 6.5 x 55 or 7mm/08, I think you might enjoy the experience. Your retinas and ligaments will thank you later in life.
I second this.

I'll add that, if you reload and would like to tinker with a long range formula nonetheless, then maybe pickup a rifle in .260 Remington.

One thing I told my wife back in 1997 about weather in Alabama is if you don't like the weather just wait a few min it will change. Yesterday the weather was fairly decent, went to bed listening to rain beating the roof, got up today to wind blowing like a hurricane and cold as heck (for me anyway). Finally this afternoon the wind quit, temp got up close to 59 deg so I grabbed the Winchester and headed out to the woods. Completely honest I was expecting this thing to ring my bell and add another pain to the list. Did get smart and put ear plugs in along with ear muffs then I could not put it off any longer. I must say I was pleasantly surprised, I have owned 30-06's that kicked harder and after 4 rds I called it a day and biggest thing was all 4 rd were in the red bulls eye. Not touching but still at a range of 50-75 yards and my old eyes nothing to complain about. I do have one neighbor that gets scared from time to time with some of the things I set off or shoot and she didn't stick her head out once (might have been to afraid to). But thanks to all for input and encouragement. Now the biggest thing is to decide do I keep it or trade it off.
