Recommend a book

I would like to find a good book to read explaining how to handle a self-defence encounter. I am wanting something that will explain things like proper concealment, proper griping techniques, when to draw your weapon, actions to be taken after an encounter, shot placement. Just stuff like that.

It is mainly for my wife so I don't want something so "technical" she can't understand it.

In the gravest of extremes is good. It does not deal much with the actual act of shooting, drawing, etc... but if covers the legal, ethical and mental aspects of carrying a firearm for selfdefense, and it does go into type of gun and caliber considerations.

Maas Ayoob I think is how you spell the Authors name.

Mas really is at the top of the list, and he has several books.

Go to Amazon and search for "Masaad Ayoob" and you will see several books, plus some others related to the topic.

I bought one called "concealed handgun manual" by Chris Bird. It had a woman on the cover so I thought maybe it would be OK for my wife. It was OK, not great but OK.

Handgun Combatives is pretty good, mindset, techniques, etc. Dave Spaulding. Vickie Farnam's book FOR women has some more specialized techniques for women. Vicki Farnam "Women Learning to Shoot". Both on amazon.

Oh, John Farnam's book on defensive handgunning is very good on the after-shoot stuff, too.

There are no words to describe how badass this book is. A survivalist manual disguised as a novel. Very in depth about manual of arms, home defense, patrolling in day or night, setting up ambushes, all which take place in the U.S. Not to mention how to treat gunshot wounds, give a direct blood transfusion, make improvised thermite & claymore explosives, etc etc ect!

Respectfully, I have to completely disagree. The OP is looking for a guide to CCW, not an fictional novel on the end of the world.

Masaad Ayoob is a well respected authority on CCW, you will probably be well served by his works, but please keep in mind that some aspects of his published work is extremely dated. While certain fundamental principles are timeless, In the Gravest Extreme was published nearly 30 years ago. With the changes that have taken place in recent years within the field of CCW weapons and techniques I wish I could point you in a better direction.

I will second the recommendation of _ In The Gravest Extreme, The Role of the Firearm in Personal Protection by Massad Ayoob. He has a dvd _ Judicious Use of Deadly Force, covering much of the same material. I think the 'legal' information in the book is outstanding, what you need to do after you have defended your life may just save your life - again.

These may be too intense for her, depending on how much experience she has. I've made note on some of the other books to expand my library.

I see he has several, maybe I'll read several of them and pick one or two to let the ol' lady read. I will also check out Stephen Wenger's book as well.

OK I ordered a couple of Massad Ayoob's books and have them on the way. But somewhere along the line I ran across some of Jim Wagner's books. I was just wondering if anyone had ever heard of him or read any of his stuff.

I also noticed Netflix has a couple of DVDs by him, I'll have them on the way shortly. Maybe I can watch them and tell if his books are worth buying.
