I've just come to NYC and will stay a few years for work and it's disturbing that the gun law here is so strict. Not wanting to get into the trouble of owning firearms here, I think the best way to enjoy shooting for me is to rent rifles and pistols (and shotguns to shoot clays if possible) at a range in New Jersey. I did find some similar advice in other posts but they're at least 70 miles from me. Can anyone recommend some ranges IN NEW JERSEY near Manhattan where I can walk in and rent at a reasonable price? (ranges in NYS definitely will require pistol licenses and that is troublesome to me as a foreigner).
Thank you all in advance.

By the way, does anyone know whether it's legal that I buy and keep gun parts in NYC as souvenir? Such as the bolt assembly of an old springfield 03.

Only thing I know about is shotgun ranges. Thunder Mountain in Ringwood, NJ is close, nice and rents guns. Skeet, trap and 5 stand. They do not have rifle or pistol facilities.

The only two that I know of by you is the Tenafly Pistol Rifle club (no shotguns) and I believe you have to bring your firearms and ammunition, but it is right over the GW Bridge. The other is the Firing Line in Pearl River NY which about fifteen minutes from the Tappan Zee Bridge, they rent firearms. Lastly is the Bullet Hole in Belleville NJ, which is about fifteen minutes from the Lincoln Tunnel, I doubt they rent firearms but you can ask. None of them have a clay target range for shotguns, only Thunder Mountain does, which Kristensdaddy mentioned above and they rent shotguns out and are SUPER nice people to work with.

Thanks to all of you. Thunder Mountain is indeed near to me, 40 miles.
So how does it actually charge? The website didn't mention the rent fee of the shotgun. Is it like 9 bucks for the skeets and 9 bucks for the ammo, per round, that's all?

My research into Tenafly, Firing Line and Bullet Hole gave negative results though. Tenafly and Bullet Hole don't rent, while Firing Line is in NY so requires a license to shoot pistols.

In answer to your question about Thunder Mountain, you shoot their gun, you buy their ammo. Fair enough. I think shells, gun and all it ended up about $20 for a round of skeet. The gun rental probably would have applied to additional rounds but I only shot one.

I grew up in Bergen County, NJ and as a kid (1960's and 70's) I always wanted to shoot at TM. It didn't interest my dad so it never happened. Went back to visit for the first time since 1978 and went to TM. Rented a really, really, (really) used Browning Citori. Shot a 25 straight. I can say I have never missed a skeet target in NJ!

P.S. Sorry you all have to suffer those gun laws. Here in Georgia we really do have it good.

Thanks for the recommendation. I already did research on Shoreshot, it's only just a bit far from me, 70 miles. If I have to drive 70 miles I think "ready aim fire" may provide more options and the gold membership fee include free pistol rental. Heritage firearm range seems ok too.

Belleville Pistol Range, Belleville, NJ. Just off of Route 3 and Route 21. Not fancy to say the least.

Great high power at Cherry Ridge (Highland Lakes area) of of Rt. 23 but that's farther away.

Unfortunately, our range is Secaucus is gone.

Only the Easton, PA location of Heritage Guild has a range and rents firearms. They've got a decent range (new, well-lit), and rent pistols and rifles (5.56 and 7.62x39 - nothing more powerful). That's close to 80 miles away from the OP, so he may not like to travel that far.
