What is is a good choice for a deer / pig hunting rifle scope for range of 100 to 200 yards max. .270 and 30/06 rifles. $200 budget. Thanks

I've been using Leupold exclusively and can't find anything that is as good and reliable for the $. In the $200 range is their 3x9x40 Hunter model. I have one on a 7 mag and it holds zero no matter what. I also have one of the top shelf 3x9's of their's and the quality is exceptional. Other than the turret design, I can't tell the difference in optic quality between the VX-III's I have and the Hunter model, both are excellent glass.
I have never had one leak, fog, loose zero or change, or break a reticle or any other problems, and I have some that are 30 some years old. I particularly like the eye relief and clarity Leupold's have. I can't stand to pull a rifle up to my face and have a frustrating range of eye relief that either costs me the shot, or gets your eye blackened by the diopter. Go with a Leupold and you'll never look back!

3-9x40

Another vote for 3-9x40 because it's not a very demanding scope to build so even the cheaper ones seem to be pretty decent. Leupold, Nikon, Bushnell, all good scope makers. Vortex is making a name for themselves both for their top of the line scopes and the cheaper models.

I've bought a couple of scopes from SWFA http://swfa.com/ and their Sample List and would say it's worth a look.

Remember that if you have to buy rings those are going to set you back 20-50 dollars.

Thanks for the tips folks. I've been told the Sightron SI 3-9x40mm is a great entry level scope. Think I'll give that a shot.

For hog hunting I prefer a 6X fixed. No dials, no knobs, no messing around as your hog runs away. Ditch the flip-up covers for clear lens protectors. Nothing like going for a quick shot only to find those covers snapped down.

A Burris Fullfield II or the newer E1 in 3-9x40 would be my choice. The other two I'd look at also would be the Vortex Viper 2-7's on clearance, and the Nikon Monarch UCC 3-9x40 if you can still find it for $200 on sale, or used. I prefer the Burris out of those as long as you are sighting it in and forgetting it. If you are going to be constantly dialing on the turrets, I prefer the Nikons as you can reset them to zero. I've got both the Monarch and Burris, and I feel the Burris has slightly better glass, while the Nikon has better turrets and everything else. They have both been pretty durable and held up well for me. Both are great choices depending on what needs you have with it.

Do you plan to dial for longer shots? Or do you plan to sight it in at the ranges you shoot and leave it?
