Anyone have a particularly great experience in South Dakota that they want to pass on? I'm planning a trip soon. Thanks.

where in s.d. do you want to be?

plankinton, mitchell, huron, chamberlain all have good hunts. what other hunting do you want to do while you're here? plenty of good opportunity for waterfowl, and if you want the best s.d. has to offer, go late in the year and pick up a deer tag, too. pheasants are tons more fun to hunt when its below 20° and snowy out. dogs don't tire out, either.

if you come out early in the year w/ the rest of the tourists, you might consider taking advantage of the pheasant hunting out near the pierre area and whacking some prairie dogs while you're out.

just depends what exactly you like. if you want to hunt a pheasant farm you can combine a pheasant and antelope hunt in the same area...

I've hunted the Walk-in areas as well as state land and waterfowl production areas around Webster. There are birds to be found, but the hunting is tough because there are SOOOOOOO many people hunting these places.

Unless you're hunting private property with contolled hunting, don't expect limits being common.

Remember, in South Dakota, not only do you have to use non-toxic shot on federal land, but state land as well. Walk-in areas you can use lead.

Good luck.

We hunt on private land near Pierre. Plan to pay $100. per day tresspass fee and much more if guided with trained dog.

I'd rather not disclose our little ringneck paradise. But I'll share this:

Contact Chamber of Commerce for any town within 12 miles of Pierre (pronounced peer) and ask about pheasant hunting. Ask for brochures. Make your choice based upon calling a couple references.

Good hunting to you.
