Redding 2400 Case Trimmer Collet

Hey Everybody,

This is my first one on this site and I wish I'd found it sooner, it looks great. My problem is a new Redding 2400 trimmer. Does anyone else have one that does not work or requires two extra hands to use?? The instruction sheet says to "depress the push-button collet lock and rotate the handle". Supposedly in less than 1/2 turn the collet will lock and hold the case. Does not happen. Depressing the button on mine does absolutely nothing. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

This was alot of money for something that at first look does not work.

It really is a cool trimmer. I have one and really like it. It may take a bit of time to get it down if this is your first trimmer.

What I would do is give Redding a call and have one of their on-line techs walk you through the process with it in front of you that way if you have any questions, you can ask right away.

I'm at work right now (LUNCH) and can't really spend alot of time but will check when I get home and see if anyone else had the chance to help you.

Don't give up on it.

It works just fine, but there is a learning curve! I thought you needed 3 hands the first time I played with it.

Well, I have one of these trimmers and I've been less than impressed.

1. The first cutter I got with mine was so dull it wouldn't cut.
2. The micrometer was missing a screw.
3. I trimmed some 30 caliber nickel plated cases and after trimming maybe 20, the cutter was too dull to trim 30 caliber cases and new cutter heads cost about $18 each.
4. Now, after trimming probably two or three thousand cases, the turning of the cutter is less than smooth; it feels rough like the metal has galled.
5. Occasionally the settings will slip and you'll trim more off a case than was intended and have to readjust things.

The good points are:

1. Redding replaced the cutter head free.
2. Redding sent me 3 screws for the micrometer. The first one was the wrong one so the second time they sent me 2 just to make sure they got it right.
3. The means of holding the cartridge case is very flexible and handy.
4. It's easy to precisely change the amount a case is being trimmed by even one or two thousandths of an inch.

In short, though mine is usable, I would never buy one again. The Forster trimmer I had and sold was a lot more satisfactory and cost quite a bit less. I trimmed many nickel plated cases with it with no problems, etc.

My advice; do what I did and suffer or, if possible, return the trimmer for a refund and buy something else. I see no reason for there to be a "learning curve" or to need "three hands" for a trimmer in this price range.

There is a learning curve with any new pc of machinery, no way around it! Till I got the hang of things, I thought I needed three hands. There is nothing wrong with my statements. Redding is good stuff, but better stuff is Wilson with some accessories from Sinclair!
