Refinish issues for a case hardened receiver?

I am working on a little side project- I am tinkering around on a single shot shotgun. I am wanting the receiver to be "in the white," polished and smooth.

It has what I believe to be a true (not painted on) case hardened finish. Is there anything that would prevent me from using normal metal prep procedures to bring this to being in the white? IE, am I affecting the strength of the metal by removing the finish?

Normally, I would send this kind of work out to experts, but this is just a $25 gun I am trying some different things out on. Thanks.

No, maybe.

I would not take a belt sander to it to get the color case off..

But, if it is real, and you just polish the color off?
The hard carburised layer under the color will still be there under it.

Anyway, the critical hardness is on the inside of the receiver where the locking bolt slides and the shell hits the standing breech.

I'd leave that alone.

Yeah, thats all I meant. No belt sanders, just normal sanding, polishing procedures. Honestly, theres not much finish remaining anyway, but you can still see some.

So what I hear you saying is that this top layer is merely cosmetic, not functional, correct?

I wont be modifying anything inside of the receiver, or making any alterations. Just cosmetic stuff.
