I'm sorta new around here, and this is my first thread. From what I've read so far most of you seem fairly knowledgable and friendly so I'd like to pose a question. I recently acquired two .38 Colt Revolvers. One is a Police Positive and the other is a Police Special. They are both 6 inchers, and function flawlessly however the finish of both guns is in very poor condition. The Special is a nickel plated or hard chrome job and a lot of the plating is gone, especially around the barral and rear sight notch. The Positive is blued and has HEAVY holster wear and corrosion issues under the grips. I have polished most of the corrosion off but fear for the further degradation of the weapon. My question is how much money would I be looking at for a competant refinish of the guns. I've never looked into such a matter. I would like the Special to be re-plated to its original condition and the Positive reblued. Not wanting anything custom or modified (unless I can find a fair price on having the Special's barral shortened to 4 inches, recrowned, and have a bead style sight installed) They're both mechanically sound and I want to keep them so I'm not worried about collector value or anything of the such. Only their use and maintenance. I don't feel confident in my own skills to try one of those "re-blue" at home ideas and I think the corrosion may need polished beyond my skills. If any of you have gone through this process I would just appreciate some ballbark prices for the gun's restoration. Thanks in advance.
