Reliability, Am I just lucky?

This year I have purchased 3 NIB semi auto 9MM handguns. I use factory brand ammo of all different configurations. I have never had any malfunction of any kind. No Mag problems, FTF, FTE. Nothing but flawless operation from any of these guns. There have been no modifications to any of these weapons. The were field stripped & lubed out of the box, that's it. They are all completely stock. They are field stripped, cleaned & lubed after each range outing. The average rds fired at each range visit is about 300. Did I just buy the right handguns or have I been exceptionally lucky?

Stoeger Cougar 8000 - rds fired - 2300+

CZ 75B - rds fired - 2000+

Beretta 92FS - rds fired - 1750+

I think the 9mm combat grade pistol field has become so competitive anymore there are no truly unreliable ones from the name brand manufactures.

If there were, they wouldn't sell enough of them to stay afloat very long.
Unlike 20+ years ago, we have the Internet now to quickly spread the word.

Rcmodel makes a good point. An unreliable 9mm is going to find it very hard to survive in the market anymore. But the three you have up there are all very, very good choices. I don't think you were lucky - you simply chose well and your new mechanical, loud-voiced friends have performed as expected.

I'd extend that to the compact pistol market, as well. I own a couple and none of the ones I have have ever really performed badly.

I'd say there's simply not a market for bad guns anymore. The reason is stated above pretty damn well. *le nod*

That may be the key. I never make modifications to my guns either and I never have issues with them. One, I'm no gunsmith, and two, I adhere to the old school belief that the engineers who design and build em actually know what they're doing.

You bought quality to start with. Thinking back on my three lemons, I realize that two were from "second tier" makers.

I'm in the same boat. I have yet to have a weapon FTF or FTE on me. I thought my AR was, for a time, until i realized i was pulling the trigger before it reset.

The Stoeger, imo, is the lowest quality pistol there, and it's not a bad pistol either.

A couple guys already said it but I'll say it again. Look at the manufacturers you went with, Beretta, CZ, I guess the Stoeger would be the lesser of the 3 but I have also heard good things about them too. So I dont think you got lucky by any means. You just went with high quality manufacturers and got high quality pistols. Also guns are like cars, with minor maintenance they will run for a long time. The occasional spring change and a steady diet of cleaning and lube should keep them in tip top shape. Congrats on your purchases. Take care of them and they will take care of you.

+1 on the no modifications. It amazes me that a manufacturer puts untold engineering hours into a product with a talented dedicated team, plus the many years of global experience some manufacturers have . . . . . . .

the last time I had an issue with any of my guns was the last time I tried yet another brand that wasn't Mini Mag in my Mosquito. I have finally given up ever having that thing like anything else, so I think that will be my last issue. I keep everything clean, lubed, and hold on tight; the guns take care of the rest..

I'm in the same boat with my Stoeger Cougar .40, never any sort of malfunction. I can only hope and pray the PT709 I just bought performs the same way.

My 9mm never fails me, but the magazine can sometimes. I had issue with my magazine on my CZ causing jams.
