A few month ago I bought a Savage Model 10FP in 223 Remington. Select handloads keep blowing the extractor off the bolt. Others work fine. It appears this rifle has a very short leade. The same loads in my Handi rifle are not a problem. Primer flow in the Savage and perfectly normal primers in the Handi rifle. Tried calling Savage Customer Service and the woman who answered knew next to nothing. I guess you don't have to pay the customer service reps much money if they don't know anything. The only thing she could tell me was that Savage made the chamber to SAAMI specs and that they used a 69 grain Sierra match bullet for testing.

I've noticed that some bullet designs don't pose a problem. The bullet in question was a 55 grain Hornady (#2260) - with less taper than many bullets. The diameter seems to be .224 until fairly close to the tip. The bolt handle closes with no undue pressure. When the bullets were seated to near maximum OAL, I was sticking the bullet in the rifling. I've backed off from 2.260" to 2.200 inches, but I am still seeing marks on the bullet. Checked the Hornady manual and they recommended a minimum length of 2.200. Still blew the extractor off. How far down will I have to go to use this particular bullet, or I do I need to resign myself to the fact that I will have to use either FMJ or match bullets in this rifle?

I realize the commercial chamber is much shorter than the NATO spec chamber. Most of what I'm reading on the Internet cautions about not using NATO spec ammo in commerical rifles. I am reading almost nothing about the commerical chambers being so short as to cause problems. If I keep seating the bullet deeper into the case I also worry about raising pressures. It just doesn't seem like either Savage or the bullet makers took the short commercial chambers into account. From the marks I'm seeing on the bullets, it appears the leade on this rifle is less than 0.090"

The Accutrigger is also somewhat annoying. Great trigger from the bench. However I bought this particular rifle for the purpose of improving my off hand shooting. When I shoot off hand I trip the trigger and the rifle fails to fire. Much like the Contender in that the bolt must be worked again before the rifle will fire. Are other users also experiencing this problem, or do most people have more sense and only fire the Model 10FP from a bench and not offhand?

Suggestions?
