I have observed something that I do not understand regarding Remington 1100’s.

My 1100’s bolt will not lock back when manually pulling the bolt back as long as there are shells in the mag tube.

A friends will lock back each and every manual cycle of the bolt even with shells in the mag tube.

Both guns have run reliabley.

I put a new carrier in my 1100 and now it will lock back each and every manual cycle of the bolt even with shells in the mag tube.

What is the mechanism that controls this?

Is it the shell ejecting from the mag tube striking the carrier latch?

I would really like to know!

I installed the Remington “competition” carrier that has the longer button into my 1100 to facilitate reloading. You can use the link below to see the part I am talking about.

I was told this was a “drop-in” part.
But it has not been.
I had to adjust the center tab and remove some length of the tab itself to properly fit/clear the carrier latch slot.

So now it seems to work fine in that respect.

An odd behavior that I observed is (only with new carrier) that if you manually cycle the bolt to feed/eject shells the bolt locks back each time.

The carrier must be manually tripped from the button to feed the round and send the bolt to battery.

If I reinstall my original carrier and manually cycle the bolt to remove/eject shells it will always release/go to battery each and every time until all rounds out of the mag tube.

The gun will shoot fast or slow with the new competition carrier but once in a very great while it will leave the last round still in the magazine tube – not on top of the carrier assembly - with bolt locked back.

If I trip the carrier and then manually pull the bolt back it will feed the last round out of the magazine tube. I then must manually trip the carrier button to let the bolt go to battery.

I reinstalled my original carrier assembly to verify that with my original carrier I have never ever had a round left in the magazine tube with the bolt locked back while firing and if the bolt is manually cycled with rounds in the mag tube the bolt does not lock back.
What am I missing here?

I hope someone can help me out.

Thanks.

Yup, that's it. If you pull the bolt open by hand and release it at the right time, you can get it to cycle. At least, I can with my 1100.
