I'm a Remington owner, having had several over the years. After-market items are much more available for the Rem than any other bolt action. It's the factory rifle action used for more match rifles, including benchrest. It's also the standard for .308 military and police snipers.

It's also got a round-bottomed action and generous recoil plate. Round-bottomed actions generally shoot better for the long term, self-centering better over temperature changes and stock variations.

Remington QC may have slipped a bit over the years, but I think you have a very good chance of getting a fine shooting rifle.

Rugers have enjoyed improved accuracy since the MKII, but I'd still buy the Rem. Besides, I hate muzzle breaks!!!

Well I have a Savage 116 300 RUM that I use for my over 1000 yard precision shooting, and i was looking at getting a 308 for everything under 1000-ish. So basically using it for target shooting. I like the feel of the tactical stocks on both...also, with the Rem SPS, im trying to determine if i should go for a 20 inch or 24 inch barrel. I heard that rule of thumb with the 308 is you lose 200fps/2 inches?

I would say the Remington. You have much more aftermarket options available (and I am not a fan of a flash hider on a rifle like that Ruger). Even though the stock on the Remington feels good, it is not exactly a good stock. Upgrading it should be up on the priority list.
