what is the general opinion on a 308 rem 700 vtr , are these a decent rifle ?
or would I be better off sticking with a savage 10 ?
thanks for any opinions

Well, with all the bad press Remington has been getting, maybe no one wants to ADMIT to owning one...

I do have a Rem 700 VTR, but in .223 not the .308 that you were asking about. And it isn't exactly a "normal" model, but one that was spec'ed and built for Cabela's some years back. The Remington standard model has the machined in muzzle brake and, I believe, a 1/9 twist for the .223. My Cabela's model lacks the muzzle brake and has a 1/12 twist.

But, it does shoot pretty well. There are 7 groups of 7 shots each - different handloads - on the attached target pic. These were shot at 200 yards. The largest group is 2 1/4" and there are two groups that are under 1". The rest are between 1" and 1 1/2". (The 3 shots in the lower center part of the target were to get the scope adjusted.)

It would probably shoot better if I swapped out the flexible plastic stock that it comes with and also put on a better trigger. The stock trigger will not adjust down under 4 lbs.

I know rem is not what it was but I have a chance at a 308 vtr stainless new in box on a trade I have read mixed reviews on this rifle it does have the x mark trigger, just not sure never shot one and really never seen one at the range kind of a rare bird I guess , looks like you got some nice groups with your .223 nice shooting.

Rems quality controls been spoty, but generally ok at the very least. Personally i thi k we hear more bad than good cause, well...its the bad.

If the trades in your favor id say grab it. Even if you dont like it they still sell pretty well. Hell Id look at it even, just cause i like the way it looks.

I have a remington 700 VTR IN .308 CAL. REPLACED THE STOCK WITH A MAGPUL HUNTER 700 AND THE ADDITIONAL MAGAZINE OPTION, ALSO REPLACED THE TRIGGER WITH A TIMNEY TRIGGER . THESE UPGRADES HAVE MADE A VERY GOOD SHOOTING RIFLE THAT I REALLY ENJOY SHOOTING

My .308 VTR with the new Boyds stock is a laser! It will nt shoot 150gr worth a flip, but 165/168/175 it LOVES. 1/2 MOA, it is 4 for 4 on dear, taking two this year already. With the tri barrel, it is heavier than a standard 700, and I guess that was the intent. The Remington stock is junk, so fixing that problem is essential in my opinion. I love mine.
