Hi, I have a Rem. 870 express with factory 2 shot extension. It's stricly for HD. If I would have of had the money at the time I would have bought a marine model or police. I can't to get too expensive but I would like to do some basic upgrades that might be useful, such as triger guard upgrade, extractor, or improved finish, like parkerized or other type of finish. Any suggestions? Thanks

Hello and welcome.

First off I own the Marine Mag. It has had a weaver rail drilled and tapped into the reciever. It has a Insight Procyon (Spelling?) light sitting on a short rail bracket mount near the extender's own bracket.

I managed see the Aimsports laser self destruct so it was replaced with a sightmark Reflex sight with it's own laser hard mounted one side and able to use the glass to aim front bead.

And a decent sling. Nothing fancy.

I dont have any other plans for the shotgun because I follow the rule of KISS (Keep it simple stupid)

Temptations abound such as heat shields etc. But.. it's where it needs to be in terms of balance, weight and mission of HD.

One option for you is to set aside a few dollars each month and trade the new gun back in and upgrade to the Mag or other model with features already installed.

I have an Express. I replaced the plastic trigger group with the metal Police part. I got it off GunBroker for something like 80 bucks. Pop out the two pins and it drops right in. As for the finish, I keep mine wiped down with CLP or Rem-Oil and it is trouble free.

Even the Police models now come with a plastic trigger guard. I think it's a non-issue.

What you need to buy now is ammo, not accessories. Learn the weapon, then decide if there's a gizmo that will make it easier and/or faster to hit things or in greater comfort.

+1 Dave. There is no reason for you to refinish a perfectly good Express, unless you're just looking to blow money on looking cool. Rub the sucker down with some Vaseline and a rag and it should be pretty well rustproof.

The whole metal vs. polymer triggerguard thing seems overplayed to me, too. If anyone's reported an Express triggerguard busting, I haven't heard about it.

Do replace the J-safety if your gun has one.
Other'n that, like Dave said, ammo and rangetime...

possumman,

it sounds like we have the same type of shotgun. imho, it is fine the way it is so long as it is kept oiled and clean. just let it soak in Breakfree CLP for a few hours, wipe off, and reassemble. that and the occasional wipe down should provide most of the finish protection you need. my 870 has not had any finish related problems thus far. it has also been a reliable shotgun.
