Rem Mod. 7 Scout Rifle?

I recently bought a used Remington Model 7, in .308 from a buddy. I am thinking about building a Scout Rifle out of it.

The one problem with this rifle is that the it has a very lightweight barrel is that it strings the round when it heats up. I'm thinking about having it cryo-treated ($50)

Next step would be to mount an moptic rail. I found this one

Afterwards, I would mount a Nikon or Burris pistol scope (~$250) and hopefully have a great, lightweight handy rifle.

You want to build a scout rifle,,,,OK . First your not building a highly accurate long range rifle that can shoot 2" 300 yards groups. Just one that can place one shot where you want it with a scope that by it self will limit distance to shoot well depending on conditions. If you can go to the range just the way the rifle is now and shot 3 rounds over a ten minute time and they group around a 1 1/2" or less be happy . If not change ammo to another brand and maybe weight. Also a pistol scope and scout scope are different in there eye relief by a small amount and on a thin barrel you might end up down that barrel more than you care for a pistol scope. Your rifle is used so it might need a very good cleaning and polishing, that could also cause groups to string along with shooting syle and how you bag your rifle when shooting from a bench. How wide are your groups and how long is the string.

I don't know how much help cyro-treating that barrel would help. It is a thin barrel by design. No matter how much you cyro-treat it will still heat up and string. You might get another 2-3 accurate shots (assuming cyro-treating works) before it starts to string again?

Another thing that you might want to look at is the scope mount. The ones shown may not mount well on your M7. As you can see the diagram shows specific measuring points. M7's have a dramatic taper after that "first step" towads the "second step" because the barrel is thinner.

I personally love the m7 and it is actually my favorite shooting rifle. I think I like it because its not a pain in the rear when hiking long distances lol The stringing doesnt happen in my rifle until about the 5th-6th shot in the group (without cooling down). But it has about 1 MOA averge on 3 shots and doesnt string on a 5 shot group when I give the barrel a few minutes to cool off.

Ok I just checked my rifle and that scope mount won't work. The taper from the barrel doesnt seem like it would allow a forward mount system without additional parts or gunsmithing.

Here's a thought...

I am setting up another Model Seven for a Scout like rifle. I am going to use a Leupold 1.5x5 in detachable mounts. I am going to keep the standard sights and add an HS Precision stock. The conventional mounted scope works much better for me at dawn and dusk and will pop right off with the QD mounts. I am pretty good with the standard iron and can ring the 200 yard gong all day long with them. That works for me with iron. I use a .223, so I have not experiecned as much bbl heating issues.

first off, i'm not sure what you are after when you talk about the rifle stringing multi-shot groups.... ? This is a lite-weight barrel contour and no matter what you do to it, It will heat up rapidly. The TRUE test of a GREAT hunting rifle is how consistantly it will place the first shot out of a cold barrel. My model 7 is EVERYTHING i expect out of a super lite bolt action carbine and will consitantly shoot 1" 3 shot groups @ 100 w/ milsurp. But of course this is w/ 5-10 mins between shots. I've never had to shoot at a deer more than twice to anchor it so what do I need a 5 shot group to prove outta this rifle anyways??

Now, as far as a scout optic mount, check w/ a local gunsmith/machinist to see if they can fab up a weaver base to mount where the rear sight attaches and use the forward reciever base and the rear sight base to mount a scope... You just need to do some more research cuz I'm sure the Col.'s influence about Scout rifles has driven the product development you are seeking. Good luck and keep us posted!

why modify an excellent rifle. the mod 7 is lite short barreled and accurate . Put a compact scope on it and your gtg .

It's thin contour barrel heats quickly ,so is ill suited for sustained,or rapid fire ,and cryo treatment won't change that.

I think you keep a mod 7, a mod 7, they will only go up in value anyways, never down. I also don't think the 308 cal, as good for scout rifles anyway, either you need a fat or fatter bullet, going slow, or a very zippy bullet, such as a 243.
