Remington 512-x

A friend had a rifle that binded up on him, so i offered to fix it or have it fixed, so i can buy it off him.

Its Remington 512-x Sportmaster bolt action. shoots .22lr, .22long, .22short, has nice irons, a tube mag.

The rifle will not open up. The bolt will turn a little bit, but wont open the action. its jammed up tight. This happened after a round was fired, then he went to extract it.

should i attack it with full force, or take it to a smith? What could a smith do to it to get it open that i couldnt?

I'd take it to a smith. I've had mine since my 9th birthday. The gun is46 years old now. I've never had it jam as you describe, but the feed rails in it are pretty flexible and on a few occasions I've had to tweak 'em to get it to feed straight. It's kinda fragile and I wouldn't get too rough with it. I've never had a lot of luck when I got POed and broke out the mallet.

Get it fixed, you'll find it's accurate in the extreme, even with CB shorts! I can routinely shoot 1.5" groups at 100 yards with mine on a calm day with bargain ammo, 550 pack federal lightening. It's near target grade accuracy. This old rifle has killed many a squirrel.

Mine lost the irons many years ago and has been scope sighted ever since. I don't know where the irons for the thing went. I've got other iron sighted .22s, though.

That's unfortunate. Take it to a smith and have it fixed properly. I've had one for nearly forty years now and have put well over 10,000 trouble free rounds through it. Accurate too. A nice rifle I'll never part with.
