Long story short, my parents bought a house a while back. A couple of months after they moved in I found a Remington 552 in a cheap gun case in the attic. It is in pretty good shape except for some light rust on the barrel. I finaly got around to cleaning it up and it shot it today and it ran fine. For some reason I thought this model was long discontinued but a quick Google search revealed that they are still being made.

I really like this rifle! I feel like a kid with a new toy. Does anybody else have one of these? Is there anything that I should know about it?

I know what you mean. They are pretty sweet guns. you don't see them much simply because they cant compete with the Ruger 10/22 or the Marlin 60 at the price Remington wants for them.

Nice though - feels and handles like a big boy gun, and it has the same big game style open sights as the 870, 7600, and other Remington long guns. For a Remington fan, i couldn't imagine a better .22 rifle - seamless transition to other Remington rifles would make it one hell of a trainer.

I have both a Marlin and a 10/22 and this Remington feel a little less like a kids gun.

Nice rifle. I have to strip mine down after about 1000 rounds and give it a good cleaning otherwise it will have extraction problems. That is probably due more to dirty .22s than it is to any failure of the rifle. A very accurate rifle.

Hello friends and neighbors // You can download a manual from the Remington web site.

New, Remington lists them at $563.00, great find.

Mine shoots any mix of .22 sizes reliably ,for fun plinking. Outstanding at 50yds and not too loose at 100yds.
It also made a good squirrel rifle scoped with see thru rings.
Check the scope accuracy and tightness every now and then.

I feel the need to check mine out soon.:D

Great find!

I have my dad's old precursor to the 552 Speedmaster - the 550 (and not the -1 or -2!). It feels more like a Caddy or Lexus when it shoots compared to my 10/22 or Marlin 60.

I'm sure you're gonna spend hours enjoying this one!

i have had 2 552 speedmasters....eat anything i feed them and in my opinion is one of the best looking/performing semiauto .22s every made. Gave the first one to my brother years ago and bought my current one in 1994...its the bdl model with the gloss finish and checked furniture.

I enjoy my 552. Reliable and accurate. As mentioned earlier, they are pretty pricey when compared to the Marlin 60 which is a very nice SA 22rf and to the Ruger 10/22. The 10/22 has been reduced to a really cheap feeling junker compared to earlier examples of that model. You got a very nice find in the attic.

In the original post I did not mention that I also found an old Remington single shot Model 514 with it. Unfortunatly it was not in a case and had rusted badly in the attic. It is still functional but I don't expect much accuracy out of it.

Great little rifles, and about the only auto that'll run short, long and long rifle. I have occasional malfunctions with shorts, but otherwise it's a very reliable, accurate and fun little .22 that I highly recommend to anyone.

GD is right. Clean it fairly regularly or it'll have extraction issues.
I've had to extract brass from the chamber of a Speedmaster 552 before. The chamber didn't release the brass after the round was fired, and somehow the rim of the casing was torn off. A good cleaning fixed everything.

They're still great little rifles, and a good cleaning after a big day at the range should be standard procedure anyway.

The 550 will shoot all three as well.

Back on topic, nice find. I'd rather have a used 552 than a brand new in the box 10/22 and Model 60 together.

Now I have all three, plus this rusty old Model 514 bolt gun. When it stops raining I may take it out back this evening and see if I can get it to group. Hopefully the bore had enough bullet lube and crud in it to protect it from rusting.

wife got one when she was around 10 years old...she still has it and we still shoot it very often...they are great .22

Personally I am not a big fan of the 10/22 I own one and it is a fun gun to shoot, just like others better....and the good ole speedmaster is one of them.
