I just bought a 597 this summer because my 552 was starting to jam. Ithought I would just keep the 552 in storage. I tried sighting in the 597 what a peice of crap, a 2" group at 50 yards is nearly impossible to get. I have tried several types of ammo and it doesn't make a differance. If you plan on getting a .22 don't get a 597 (if you plan on hitting what you shoot at).

Mine is accurate; much better than what you report, anyway. It does, however, jam a lot. Only sure fire way to avoid jamming that I've found is to load no more than 5 rounds in the magazine. Newer versions of the magazine haven't helped.

A 597 is not a gun I'd recommend to anyone.

Never had a jam in mine but it ain't to accurate. Guess Remington didn't want us to have the best of both worlds with their rifle.

Mine was never accurate. Jammed like hell. Bought the new generation mags. Still jammed and still not accurate. Free-floated it, worked on trigger, etc, etc, etc.

Still jammed and still not accurate. I sold it for what I paid for it and never looked back.

Bought a Savage bolt action .22 instead. Never have had a FTF, and accurate as hell.

do a couple of things. first, make sure all your mags are metal, not plastic, and have the circle 10 on the bottom. If you have plastic ones, send them into remmy for new exchanges.
take it apart according to manual, when you get to the part about pulling the guide rods out, do so. and then I would polish the hell out of them , with some remoil, and some 0000 steel wool. Now here comes the important part.
When you put them back in, just use your fingers for tightening, and only put them back in, just enough, so you can close the back plate back up on them, and close the action up, no need to tighten them in , any further.
This will keep those rails nice and loosy goosy in there; this stops the bolt binding problem, and which will also cause different seating depths to occur, at
the chamber. This is a factory problem, and they know about it, but it is a legal thannng....
normally , for a semi auto, these rifles have very good accuracy.

i love mine. its loves fed 510s & cheap rem thunderbolts. mine has been fine out of the box!Groups way better than my 10/22
some guys do say that you need to adjust the guide rods. that the come from the factory to tight. & after this they feed just fine.EDIT Ranger must type a lot faster than I. PS at 50yrds holes touch holes

Mine was great out of the box... The only things I've done to it was when I got it home, I did the standard issue break-down and cleaning I was taught to do with every gun I would ever bring home. A little film of machinegun grease on the rails, seat the guide rail allen screws to slightly snug, a light film of machinegun grease to the bottom of the bolt (where it contacts the hammer), a good swabbing of the barrel - clean and light oil, re-asseble and shoots great...

Mine does have a personality conflict of it's own though... it started out liking the Federal 510's... but now doesn't seem to like them... it will fire them, eject the empty, feed the new, but it won't recock the rifle... (???) But it now LOVES the Remington Golden HP's and the Federal Bulk copper plated HP's... as well as CCI Minimags, and CCI Velocitors... but it's far more accurate than your report... < shrug> - It's no Anschutz, but it's no slouch as semi's go either...

Cheers...

Spend a few more $$$ and get a 10/22. At 50 yards they are very accurate and they rarely jam.

I think the mags that come with a 597 are to blame for jamming.

On rimfirecentral.com, there is a Sticky on the for the Remington 597. There, you will find many tips. One tip is a spring you can buy from Brownell's and it make (2) magazine springs for the 597.
