Remington 700 30-06, is this a good deal?

jon,

I'd say you've already mentioned it. The 7mm-08 Rem is everything you listed: recoil, ballistics, and economy. I have a Savage/Steven in 7mm-08 and I love it... I have others, but this is my favorite... The Marlin 336c 30-30 is second...

Cool. Thats probably what I would prefer to find also. I may have to hunt a little. Of course with the barrel and bolt of the savage I could buy another caliber and convert later too. Maybe if they had one in .223 and I could step up the caliber when I push out further.

Lots of good advice here, I think the savage in .243 or .308 would be a great choice, I've had rem 700 BDL in the past and they were great, but my friends 10 year old 700 ADL is not the same, I told him to bring it over and I would adjust the trigger for him, I couldn't due much to lighten it like my 700 BDL, not the same animal unless they started to go back to the trigger of BDL, people on here will know if they have, mine was a rem 700 bdl in 6mm from the mid 70's, I know im old, Semper Fi.

I guess it depends. I have just come into loving the .30-06. It isn't the best tack driver in the world but for me is enough. With surplus ammo being available on the cheap I have a hard time walking away from it. At $0.28 a shot from the CMP you can hardly find .223 for that price, let alone .223 with reloadable brass. I know surplus ammo is hardly target grade ammo and it is loaded with lighter bullets but the fact is its cheap and right now plentiful. If you plan on burning a lot of ammo it is hard to beat the Greek .30-06 through the CMP. If you want the best it isn't it and I don't want to pretend it is. It is something to think about. I don't think you can reload any of the .30 calibers for near that, even with dirt cheap components.

I would get the 700. If it doesn't shoot well enough you can always sell it for darn near what you have in it and will have learned a bit in the process. The price isn't amazing but it isn't bad. Toss on a budget line scope from a decent manufacturer and you will have yourself a nice starter that will certainly let you learn on. Hard to beat for $500-$600 total rifle/scope investment along with the potential for ammo costing $6 a box of 20.

I've always been a .280 Rem fan, but recently bought my first .30-06 and am very satisfied. $350 sounds like a fair deal. Not to keep repeating everyone, but you won't have any trouble getting your money back if you don't like it.

It sounds to me like what your looking for is a Savage in one of the smaller calibers. The nice thing about the Savage is that you can change the barrels yourself so even if you run across one that isn't in the caliber you really want you can change it.

The Remington is a pretty rifle with a higher price tag, they do tend to keep their value better but not unless they are pristine IME. Since your looking for a shooter I would go with the "other" brand myself.

I like the .243. Reloading makes it even more fun. 55-grain for poor innocent prairie dogs and I've used the Sierra 85-grain HPBT for some 20+ Bambis. I haven't done all that much with my 7mm08, but the recoil at the bench isn't bad, even at a total weight of just 6.5 pounds.

Well I stopped by the shop again today and they had several Savages in the shop. I preferred the shorter action but the only one they had was a 243 Model 10 with a Simmons 4x9 he wanted 375 for. I thought that wasn't a great deal. He had two 7mm Remington Magnums. One 116 in stainless for 400 with a Centerpoint scope and a 111 in the same caliber with a Simmons Prohunter 6x18. He only wanted 250 for that one so I decided to grab it. If I don't like it I'm sure I can get my 250 back out of it. What do you guys think of the 7mm Rem Mag? If I don't care for it the rifle may be a good candidate for heavy barrel in another caliber later. I know the 7mm ammo is a more expensive but I will be reloading so it won't be that huge of a deal I think.

BTW. I KNOW the stainless 116 would have been an overall nicer rifle but I'm trying to keep the budget down and I'm not sure about the 7mm RM anyhow so I figured the cheaper rifle not only saved me money on the starter rifle but the bigger scope negated the need to immediately get a more powerful scope.

Whatever ...

Wow, after reading your thread, I am surprised you bought a 7mm Rem Mag....maybe not

I think in the future, to best help a person decide on a particular rifle the OP should include:

1. Purpose of said rifle.
2. Distance of shooting said rifle.
3. Monetary consideration for said rifle.
4. Recoil sensitivity of shooter.
5. Personal Preferences/Biases towards said rifle.
6. Shooting store bought vs reloaded ammo
Having said that, from your thread I can conclude

1. Punching paper
2. Up to 1000 yards
3. Under $350-500
4. Don't know
5. Unknown
6. Unknown

With that in mind, as long as you are happy with your purchase, you did just fine.....no matter what anyone says.

Good luck and fine shooting.

Exactly right.

Seems like he was in a big hurry to buy a centrefire rifle - any rifle - for casual plinking (at 500-1,000 yds!). A 7mm Mag. is as suitable for that purpose as any other.

I recall his suggestion that reloading cost was an important reason to prefer the .243 over the .308 ("the difference per round is small but it does add up over time"). Recoil was another factor mentioned in favour of the .243 and 7-08. Apparently both those consideration went out the window when he saw what 'deals' the pawn shop had available.

I was merely asking a question about the market value of the weapon and what issues, if any, I should look at when determining the monetary value of the weapon before purchasing. Thats all. The personal factors were brought in by others for some reason.
There are many books, magazines and other reference sources that provide raw numbers (see for example Blue Book of Gun Values, or Used Price - Guns), as well as generic advice of what to look for (see for example "Before You Buy a Used Rifle", or "Buying A Used Rifle"). This forum endeavours to be a little more insightful/helpful, which requires an open, non-defensive disclosure of the particular needs, wants and experience of the person posing the question.

I didn't think of the fact that some think your skills as a driver determine the value of the car. Nor do I see whether or not you have a driving instructor effects the value of the ride. It may effect how good a DRIVER you are, but its doesn't determine the qualities of the car. See where I'm coming from on that one?
A driver's skills do not affect the value of a vehicle, but they do impact upon its suitability. I would not recommend a Ferrari to a novice driver, or a VW 'bug' to the head of a large family with multiple children, dogs, etc. See where I'm coming on that one?

OK now that you have the rifle you can hea over to the Savage Shooters forum and start seeing what you can do with it.

Just because it's a 7mm mag today doesn't mean it has to stay that way.

Osteodoc, For future reference you should trying reading the entire thread, It might help. The OP was simply about the market value of ONE rifle. None of the factors you listed have any bearing on that other than #3 adn that only pertains to the value of the rifle. That being said, I bought the rifle I bought, thanks for your suggestions and advice especially those that actually answered the questions I asked rather than all the other drivel that was added.

Thank You Bullitholz. My sentiments exactly. Personally, I don't think I would have done much better for a high powered rifle with a decently powered scope for the money if I had waited longer. The Savage is a good base for building to my needs down the road so I'm not that concerned about if it wasn't EXACTLY what I wanted. If I change my mind I'm positive I can recover the 250 later if I choose. For now I think it will work fine.

I'm out. I have requested this thread is closed. It doesn't serve any more purpose.
