So, I was at Sportsmans Warehouse looking trying to figure out what to buy next, and on their counter in the gun section, they sometimes have custom combo(rifle, scope, blah, blah) for sale.

Yesterday, thye had a Remington Model 700 Mountain Gun set up. It was chambered in .280 Remington...an interesting cartridge, but not exactly common. Then they mounted this massive Bushnell Elite 2.5X-10X scope, and threw a bipod on the gun also.

So, what bothered me, is why take a perfectly nice, light barrelled mountain gun, and mount a heavy scope and bipod on it? Why start with a mountain gun for a project like that.

And, what really bothered me, is why, with a total price of under a $1000, can't I get it off my mind. It sure was pretty. :evil

Why?
Because a lot of gun buyers aren't smart enough to think these purchases through.
Also, a lot of people buying those combos don't know much about guns to begin with (those of us who know more don't leave it up to the store to pick a scope or mount it). All they see is a nice light rifle with a nice scope on it, weight of the scope is rarely a concern.
That's all there is to it.

and let me guess... in addition to the mismatched components you mentioned, the scope was mounted in steel warnes/leupolds/whatever???

and, i concur on the scope-weight thing... people rarely consider the weight of the scope or its mounts, and how it can alter the balance and feel of a rifle.

a gun like that just screams to have the bipod pulled, the scope traded off for a 2.5-8 leupold, mounted in talley lightweights... all up weight of around 6.25-6.5 pounds... what the have there is probably a poorly balanced 7.5+ pound hog, out of what is a great rifle (something about those mountain rifle stocks that are just so... perfect).
